RANT: 15 Year Yzerman Collecting Nightmare Is Over

I'm done, Dee, U, EN, Done.

I realised that with the advent of Game-Used in 1996-97, and ridiculous card printings of One Card Per Box, The Cup, BAP foolishness, Memorabillia etc. that I would have no hope of collecting every Yzerman card made, ..... 1/1's aside, which are their own nightmare.

Congrats to BAP and Upper Deck, you've ruined the hobby.

I've lost such interest in collecting that I look at this 2,000 cards behemoth, and wonder................

    What now????

It's a shame that kids that grow up now act entitled and demand Only Patch Cards. as there would be room again for 10 cards and a stick of gum for .25 cents, were kids humble like they were 30 years ago.

sorry but this just looks like a case of the "older" guys not being able to change with the hobby ..... getting frustrated ..... and quitting / failing.

Ive seen shop owners going under for basically the same reason .... not being able to get with the times.

"Kids" today dont want a .25 cent pack with 10 cards ..... no possible auto or memorabilia hit ....... with a nice piece of gum

Like this hobby, things change ..... no one is making you collect everything, you wont ask one collector that thinks he / she can get every single card of that player .... no matter how disposable their income is.

This hobby seems to have gotten to much for you ... if its not enjoyable anymore .... then your doing the right thing ..... quitying

lol the thouight of having every card of a hof player like steve yzerman would be insanely tough. im a patrick roy collector and as amazing it would be to have every different one, i think it makes it more fun that there are always more different cards to get, so thats what i do, if i see a card thats not in my collection, i try to get it in a trade, if i cant so be it. there are lots of roy and yzerman collectors out there, and hell i have a huge brad richards collection as well, i honestly would be surprised if someone out there has a bigger one, but more than likely there is, so i embrace the fact that there is always more cards and more parallels and jerseys etc of my pc players, makes it more fun to try and get them :)
My main focus is anything pre 88-89 hockey and autographs.

i have over 15000 hockey cards for trade or sale.
    lmk what you collect

I say just collect nice pieces that come along within your means. It only a hobby not a obsession. Hence, only 13 true cards in my whole pc which will never be sold or traded. To me it better to build up a room to show off your cards. Can you truly show off 2000 cards? I am one that likes to show off what I have versus keeping them in the dark. Just need to finish the man cave to do this lol.

I have to agree, its a set collector's nightmare. Gone are the days where one could collect every card in a set, once a year.

Still, as the times change, so must we. If you want to talk about it, drop me a line. I can tell you what I did when set collecting began to burn me out and what I've done. Also happy to hear your rants and what you've done in case there's something I missed?

    One last thing...

In the history of mankind, when have kids EVER been humble?

Sorry for the opinion .... I guess you forgot that this forum is full of people's opinions ... which might not exactly be to your liking.

If this was a, "please tell me im wrong and I should continue my boyhood hobby," then sorry I went across the grain.

Yes I knew it was a rant ... and I have every right to reply to it how I see it.

In your 1st post, it obviously states that you had had enough of the hobby, that the change in times has gotten too much for you .... whether you meant to say it or not.

Just because I am presumed younger than you ( which I probably am ) doesnt mean my comments / opinions are not valid in this topic. If you only wanted comments like, "dont worry it will be ok blah blah blah ... " then you should have specified.

I just call em the way I see em.

Thank god we arnt still in a time where cards were 0.25 cents per pack .... with 25,000 + produced of each card .... sure would make the hobby boring .... again ... in my opinion.

I have to agree with Centrehice that the glut of cards and sets has made the hobby less enjoyable for player collectors. When UD put's out 30 sets a year and each card has 7 different variations (not counting inserts) the idea of completing a master set is daunting.

For me the the reality check moment was when they began putting retired players in new sets. Sure it's a great way to educate people about the past. But I thought once Mario Lemieux retired I could focus on going back and getting the missing cards I needed. Not so, In just the past two years (2008 - 2010) Super Mario had over 406 different cards released!

    Of the 406 Lemieux cards:
267 are limited to 50 or less copies
234 are limited to 25 or less copies
167 are limited to 10 or less copies
    047 are 1-of-1 cards

How can that not be depressing for a player collector!
