Artifacts Patch Card - E.Staal T.Ruutu
I just found this on ebay. Dual patch card of Eric Staal and Tuomo Ruutu. I am 99% sure the patch from Ruutu is from the Blackhawks jersey, but he was traded a couple years ago. Why would UD use an old jersey a couple years down the road.

Gotta use up the stock somehow. Thornton's been a Shark for how long now and they're still using Bruins pieces for him.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I understand if they are traded mid-season, but years down the road is ridiculous!

So what do you do with Wayne Gretzky? Throw away all his Oilers, Kings, and Blues worn jerseys since his last team was the Rangers?
Just an example, there are tons of others.

Not a good example. He's the greatest player ever and retired - unless they plan on getting Wayne's recently-used golf course shirts, everything is dated in that fashion. Moreover, when's the last time you saw either an Oilers or Blues Gretzky memorabilia piece being used? No matter what it's from people are going to desire a Gretzky jersey.
It's ridiculous to get a card of a player featuring memorabilia 4 years and 2 teams ago. I've got a Kovalev jersey showing him in a Canadiens jersey with a bright yellow swatch. They're known as le bleu, jaune, et rouge after all.

Last time I saw a Gretzky Oilers swatch? Last season. Famous Fabrics.
Blues though, not sure.
(point still stands, but I had to nit-pick

So only "great" players get to use previous teams jerseys on their cards? Who gets to make the decision on who is worthy and who isn't?
How about Hossa, he has been on 3 teams in the past 4 years. What do you do, throw away all of his Pittsburg and Detroit fabric? If you only produce Hossa cards using Chicago uniform, that could limit the number of Hossa cards produced for a few years.
The other option would be to show him in a Redwings or Penguins uniform on the card depending on the jersey you need to use. That seems even more ridiculous, and I'm sure Chicago collectors would have some beef.
I understand that in an ideal world the jersey/patch swatch would match the picture on the card, but if you consider the cost of a jersey it is a little unreasonable to ask that a card company would just throw away expensive resources. Especially of a guy like Ruutu that does not get a lot of memorabilia cards. Would you buy a new jersey just to produce a few cards?
I saw a cool Robitallie card the other day where he was pictured in an LA uniform, but had a sweet Winged Wheel patch. I almost bought it. It would be a shame to think that jersey got tossed if someone made the decision that Robitaille wan't "great" enough.

I have never seen a Gaborik patch from a NYR jersey lol, guess they are just using old stock.

Looks at the Artifacts Patch cards of Marian Hossa...they are still using an Ottawa jersey. Hasn't been with them for 3 teams!! Typical UD.
Check it out (borrowing BIGHOSSAFAN's scan):
