Question about pricing
Hi guys, It might sound somehow stupid, but I really cant make sense of it...why is Stamkos YG going for $50 on ebay regurarly (a card that is not limited in terms of print) while people look at me weirdly when I ask for $75 for my spa stamkos chirography /50 (hard signed auto limited to 50 prints?) Surely this card must have at least for its rarity 50% higher value? But it doesnt seem so? can you explain this to me? (I am not trying to be difficult this is not complaining, rather genuine curiosity to learn something new) thanks

Simple.
The Young Gun is a Rookie Card, the Chirography is not. Rightly or Wrongly, people place a higher value on the RC.
And the YG is limited...... just not as limited as your signature card. Likely between 5000-7500 of them out there.

hmmmm...but rookie card or not, if there is 5000 prints of a card, then that card is 100x easier to get than 50 print card (which on top has a hard sig on it)...thanks for the info...just cant get my head around this...why is it that people rate rookie cards so high?

Yeah, I mean - it's all about percieved value.
Young Guns are normally a really popular set - during the years of the Upper Deck exclusive (2005-06, through to 2009-10) - Young Guns were often the first live rookie cards of the best new players. Lots of set builders, lots of player collectors. They're limited enough that they're not like Victory, OPC, MVP, etc..... and when you get 6 per box, it means roughly every 8 boxes you'll get any one particular card.... so (on average) you'd be going through $500+ worth of product before pulling that Young Gun.
But this isn't to say that every non-RC autograph is going to be worth less than the YG of a player is. Obviously the set & the print run are going to have something to do with it.
Also, consider this. Many people will want a Stamkos autograph for their collection. They want hard signed, but don't really care which one it is. There are 100s, if not 1000s of them out there (and there will be 1000s sooner or later).
There are also many people that collect Young Guns - and want a Stamkos Young Gun, even if they have several other RCs already.

I see...so based on this, would you say that UD series 1 is one of the best investments one can make in terms of value? and another question while I have experienced collectors answering:) : what cards do you recommend for grading? I see a lot of rookies get graded, but not as many sigs...how much does a card increase in value after grading? Sorry to bombard you with questions guys, but for me a big part of being a member on scf besides trading is that I can learn new things and become "better" (more knowledgable) in the hobby...thanks

well it all depends of the grade..
graded 10 which is SUPER Super Rare like double the book value around so lets say for a stamkos yg graded 10 could fetch 150-200$ easily
9.5 graded could get your book value so around 110-130$
9 graded would get your 70-90$
lower would get you the regular price or less..
hope this helped

ye that helps thanks,,,,aaaand so why doesnt everyone grade most cards then?

because a 5$ card..graded 9.5 ( which would be rare) is worth maybe 10-12$ at most...
and grading cost more:)
and Beckett Grading is tought...9.5 the card must seem perfect to you

On the original question...the Young Guns RC is considered one of the three staple RCs of the Exclusive era, along with the Future Watch from SP Authentic, and of course The Cup RC. It may not be flashy or have an auto or memorabilia or low numbering, but it is still considered one of the must-have RCs. The Chirography auto, while a very nice card--and from a set that a few folks try to put together every year--doesn't have as wide an appeal. SPA's a good mid-high-end set and the on-card autos are desirable for sure, but even at 50 copies it doesn't attract as wide and deep an interest as the YG and in a lot of cases even the Sign of the Times autos also found in SPA.
My quick two cents on grading - generally speaking with the way most of us are these days, we pull a card out of a pack and it goes more or less straight into its toploader. Thanks to QC and the ability to get a damaged card replaced by the manufacturer, I *expect* that my card will be in NM condition out of the pack. The idea of spending significant dollars to get the card sealed in a rather ungainly casing just doesn't appeal to me.Last edited by RGM81; 11-16-2010 at 09:45 PM.
