Only reason I got to McDonalds is for the hockey cards.
Maybe Burger King will start selling some hockey cards now. I heard Burger King was going to become more of a restaurant atmosphere and start selling alcohol. Burger King would own McDonalds with alochol and hockey cards! :)

This.
There is no other reason for McDonald's to discontinue the promotion unless it is not worth it for them to continue.

Absolutely true! No big company doesn't make a calculated decision based on whim's or let's not do it because we don't want to anymore. They look at feasibility, and if it wasn't feasible to continue the promotion. They then look at what is a better long term solution that makes economical sense.
McD's didn't become a big restaurant chain, by making irrational decisions.
Although my planned weight gain this year has been imminently missing.......

One (if not) the main reason why Rotten-Ronnies is through (at least for now) with the hockey card promotions is due to the fact that the gruesome threesome of UD/Bettman/NHLPA gave McDonalds the "new" price for the "right" to sell their cards last summer.
The new price apparently didn't just go up by a point or two but by double-digits. A friend of a friend works at McD's corporate and apparently they were so impressed with the new price that it took less then 48-hrs to send-out the PFO letter to the NHL. They didn't buy the increase, especially when the economy is still poor.
You can criticize McDonalds for any number of things but they run a solid business, they know what they're doing and were never going to get fleeced by the likes of Bettman and co.
