1000% agree on this. Sure the players may sign and what not, but does their autograph hold any sentimental value to you or are you just getting it just because they sign. Every autograph I've gotten TTM are from people I WANT in my PC and not just because they're quick signers. Same applies to my IP successes. And yes, I do post my successes in the TTMM, yet some people still PM me about what address I use for my success. What part of "Details posted in TTMM" don't you understand!?

One of the reason I joined SCF is because it was a great way to exchange celebrity addresses, show actual graphs and overall exchange ideas for our hobby. The TTMM feature is a fantastic database of useful information that I enjoy being a contributor. Unfortunately, some people either don't know how to use it or just ignore it and ask for an addy that is already included - this will never totally stop.

I think a majority of members have more problems with forums/threads where someone will post a success but will not share the addy in the TTMM. If you can't share an address, why post a success? I did that once early on and saw how wrong it really was to do it. Now, if I get someone that I'm specifically told not to share the addy, I put it in my collection and never post anything anywhere...

By sharing the success they do know that it can be done with some research. I have only had one success that I have shared here and not shared the address. I have shared a very large number along the way of other players and do not feel guilty at all for not providing the one. The nice part of the boards is to chat about what is going on around the hobby and to enjoy and share with other members of our autograph community. I personally want to say thank you to those who have helped me grow my collection along the way and I hope that I may have helped a few others. The folks who do not do any research usually are around for only a short while. Part of the thrill is getting something of a person you are a fan of and others have not gotten. I think that is true not only of our great custom card makers, but also of the members who are always adding addresses to the TTMM as they are researching and building their collections. The thrill of the hunt and sharing of the success is fun. With all that being said, please do not post and ask me the home address of a Pirates backup outfielder that you can reach at the stadium! Those are the posts that bother me! Best of luck to you all!

Well, some of us who are TTM newbs aren't really interested in possibly getting something back. The best signers are who you send to first when you start out TTMing, then when you are through those you can try to get anyone, which you may not get back.

I see no problem with asking for an address that is not in the database, but when it is and the person isn't new....then that's just lazy.

indyreds, I agree with most everything you have written. However, I have to respect the wishes of a signer. If I'm fortunate enough to find an obscure person, get their graph but get a return note asking me not to disclose their addy, I tend to honor their request. If you look around TTMM, you will see that I have added a large number of addresses since I have been a member. And I applaud all those who graciously and kindly contribute to the TTMM, that I think, makes SCF the best source of information for our hobby.

For me, it's all about motive. I love sports, baseball in particular, and learning more and more about the game and it's history. I also love making my own artwork in the form of cards. I collect autos TTM because it allows me to connect in a tiny way to the athletes and moments that I have enjoyed so much and to express my art as well. I collect for those reasons. Others collect favorite players, teams and moments. Still others collect for the value (subjective) of autographs. And others do it for a host of other perfectly acceptable reasons. I don't disparage against any collector's motive. I think we're all entitled to pursue our collection regardless of the reason for that collection.

2. How do we collect?

All that said above, what drives me nuts is this:

There are so many resources here on SCF and online that it shouldn't take anyone more than 90 seconds to find nearly any address or signing habit of a player. The TTMM is a great tool and the Success threads clearly show which signers fellow collectors are receiving back. There are plenty of other resources online for that info as well.

There isn't a conceiveable circumstance where that thread post should ever appear.

It's not just a declaration of laziness, but it's disrespectful to the other members on the board. The members here have contributed so much good information here that to come out and make a post like that basically invalidates this community. The information here is free and current. You could build a great collection with just the info provided on this site alone.

Bottom line: I have no problems with WHY someone wants to have a collection. My issues are with the HOW someone goes about it.

However, I also don't like "spoon-feeding" collectors who haven't ever gone through the work of digging up their own information and purely ride on the backs of others. 99.9% of the addresses you would want that haven't been posted are available to you with just a little bit of research.

+++++++++++++ I couldn't agree more. When I first joined I was a little confused on how the TTMM worked but now I get it and have realized that all those threads asking for just one or two people's addy(s) is annoying and somewhat irrtating. Not to mention it takes up space that could be used for threads that could be more interesting and helpful instead.

This is an issue I am having now. I have spent several days calling teams for spring training addresses for their minor league complex and I don't really see any benefit of just giving those away. Maybe it would be nice, but i have called and called and searched and searched for these addresses and I dont like the idea of people just mooching off of the work that i have done.
Great post rockies fan and great points. People that expect to be spoonfed everything are ridiculous. the ttmm is a great resource and it is easily accessible at no cost to users. You don't even have to register.
When people expect to have others do the simple search for them it is just insane.

the other thing that aggravates me is people asking others to find photos for them.
I send cards only so its not an issue for me, but a simple google image search will certainly turn up dozens upon dozens of photos of anyone you could ever want

It's not that easy. Most photos turned up in a quick search engine search will be far too small to print a photo. There are some tricks and different places to look, and some people have large collections of high-res pics on their computer. It's cool we have an area to post requests for photos and other things, we're all a community here.
