    Postage Due

Can anyone explain how a package makes it all the way through the postal service with insuffiecent postage? I've had two pkg's this week alone come to my mailbox with the postage due slip. Why doesnt the postal service return these to the sender to pay the postage?

They're supposed to be returned to sender, so I have no idea how it made it through.

Only time I have had that happen is when there is no return address on the envelope so they can't return it to the sender - was that the case for yours?

Nope. In fact they even write who it's from on the the Due slip.

No idea then - never seen that before! Call your local post office and ask - maybe the process on how they collect has changed and we just don't know it? lol

it was a States to States pkg so maybe that's why. I think i may start refusing the pkg's in the future if it becomes more rampant.

It costs them more to send it back. If it has partial postage, it will go through the machines but won't get caught until its checked in at the destination and they bill the reciever. If it has no postage, it will get kicked out at the first postage office. Basically they have outdated scanners.

I've always wondered if you could reverse your address with the deliveree, put no postage and see if they send it back to the other person? lol!

Update: They told me it's pretty much this like xirxious said" It costs them more to send it back. If it has partial postage, it will go through the machines but won't get caught until its checked in at the destination and they bill the reciever. If it has no postage, it will get kicked out at the first postage office. Basically they have outdated scanners." But you can write refused and they will send it back to the sender and they can then add the postage. Theyre pretty much banking on it that no one will refuse something over .20-.50 etc.

As far as the addy thing goes when i ttm pucks i put my name as the return addy and addy to deliver. just in case there isnt postage on return trip and Yeah it will come back to you from any part then for delivered postage due.

And to cap this topic. I once sent my mom a mothers day card with gift card to some store. Yes, it arrived postage due. She let me know about that one.
