One player collecting vs. a team?
What do you guys think is more fun to collect, one specific player, or a team? I am torn on this issue right now.
1.I have a good variety of Red Wings cards, all diff. players, autos and patches.
2.My favorite player to collect would be Yzerman, but WAY too much money.
3.It is VERY cool how if you collect one person, you can collect EVERYTHING from them and have hundreds of different cards.
4.On the contrary to #3, collecting a team in general may be cheaper(I can pick up Draper or Kindl cards that are very nice pretty cheap, compared to ALWAYS paying a price for say Pavel or Zetterberg). Also, a variety is cool, so you dont have a wall with JUST say Datsyuk.
I don't know what to do, I feel like collecting a single player might get a tad dull, but seeing how many hundreds of diff. cards you can get is awesome. Would it be too unreasonable to collect all Wings patches/autos like I have been, then start a mini PC of say just Datsyuk? Thoughts please!?

Different strokes for different folks, really. I think opposite to what you're thinking in #4. So, my collection is geared towards an individual. In the end though, what you decide to collect won't be a wrong choice. Having fun is the most important aspect to this hobby.

While I am primarily a player collector (Carey Price & Josh Gorges) there is of course a common theme there. I have a pretty good range of Montreal Canadiens in the collection, as obviously guys that wear the CH are by default some of my favourite players in the NHL. There's guys that I like more than others and thus I focus on them more, but it really comes down to what you want to do. There's no right or wrong way to collect.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I have actually spent a while thinking about it and I came to the realization that I was a hockey fan first, Buffalo Sabres fan second, and a (insert player's name here) fan third. Hockey will always be here (sometimes I feel that the front office is trying to shoot itself in the foot—reducing the number of Canadian teams, refusing to act on the issue of shots to the head, etc.) Thanks to Golisano (and now Pegula) the Sabres will be here for a very long time, but with free agency a favorite player might no longer wear the Sabres uniform. So, I collect Sabres cards first and favorite player cards second. If a player gets traded, I might still follow him and collect his cards, but I will ALWAYS collect Sabres cards. In fact, when a decent player comes to the Sabres thru trade or free agency, I like to get his card (and now that our new ownership is in place, Buffalo might actually become a free agent destination) even though he might not be wearing a Sabres uniform (for example, Leopold or Boyes). Anyway, that's my two cents (American). Take it for what it's worth (2.3 cents Canadian, given today's exchange rate).
to answer your specific question, i think you should exactly what you suggested (collect team patches/cards/etc and start mini PCs of favorite players).Last edited by myersfan57; 04-29-2011 at 08:58 AM.

Different people have different methods.
There are a few collectors on here that obtain a card of every player to have played for that team. Some are hardcore sole player collectors.
Just do whatever makes you happy :)

I collect Price, Halak, Roy, Dryden, Plante and Habs in general.
Now take Roy. I only collect 1985-1995-96 range. Less expensive, ton of insert not easy to find but most cards goes for 20 or less. Some more rare cost more but very few. So still very chalenging to collect. And when I pull a card like last week complete jersey from Roy in AVA then I keep it to boost the PC but not looking to trade for recent cards from him.
This spring, I decided to go over all 60,000 cards I have and to pull all Habs from it, wich I did. I put a copy of each unique card in a top loader and place then per year and brand in a box. I am now up to 3 X 3200 boxes for base and insert of habs and add 3 more boxes for the player PC.
So collecting a player with limitation can be done if the limit is logical and make sense to you like it did when Roy was moved to Colorado. Crad stop being in habs jersey so that made it easier to accept the barrier.

I collect Pavel Datsyuk and have started picking up Tomas Tatar cards. These are my main focus, though I've also branched out and started a few side projects to keep it fresh, those being collecting all Red Wings FW RC's from 01/02-present, as well as the 10/11 SP Authentic set. Do what you like, just realize that if you do decide to pick a player to collect like Datsyuk or Zetterberg you're not going to be able to own everything(Datsyuk having 1600 cards) unless you have some really deep pockets and way too much time...

Simple click on the Inventory Button at the top, then you will see a link on the right of the page that say Player indexing.
click on it, search for your player and then you will see a link to add him to you PC.
This will now add a fast link anytime you click on the Inventory button on the right menu and it will list all cards from that player in less then a second.
