cmon how well there doing is definitely a factor in sales, maybe not for the guys like tavares who are supposed to be good....take del zotto for instance, was on fire at the beginning of the year and his itg autos were going for around $20-$30 and yg's were around the same but now he's cooled down and his yg's barely hit $10 so something happened there....yes we can get into specifics and say loui eriksson should be selling more than jordan staal cause he has more points but i'm just saying generally if someone is doing a lot better than expected then sales should reflect that change.
but i get what ur saying, duchene got decent hype too, maybe not as much as tavares but enough to get some attention. i'm just saying i haven't seen tavares do anything spectacular yet except that one goal off the boards that he hit in while i've already seen duchene make a few nifty goals, and at the moment looks like a better player than tavares from my view.

I love you just for this post alone. This post is the truth.
Scoring? Tavares may be a bit better
Passing? Duchene is way better
Skating? Duchene kills Tavares in skating
Specialty teams? Duchene wins again since he plays PP and PK
Defensively? Duchene again.
Hockey sense/awareness? Duchene's vision on the ice outshines Tavares again
Deking? Tavares by a bit but Duchene still has great hands
Overall Hockey player? Duchene.

I saw Tavares last week play against the Avalanche,we also watched there practice at noon. My money is on Duchene, Tavares looked flat! I have sold most any of his cards that I have pulled to much hype!!. Duchene is awesome to watch in person!!

If that were all true then why wasn't he the first pick, or the second pick... Look at the teams they are both on. Duchene is on a team that is playing well, has good goaltending, and other players who can score. Tavares is on a bad team with only a few decent named skilled players and really poor goaltending. It's like comparing apples to oranges. If they were both on the same team or the teams had similar records and stats then sure compare away, but until Tavares has decent skill around him it's going to reflect in his play.

I'll agree with you. I was generalizing a little too much.
Del Zotto higher sales are because of a hot start. Duchene could easily have had a BV of half of what he got, if he hadn't played well out the gate. Did anyone think Ryan O'Rieley was going to be this good, this quick? His BV is much higher than most people would have guessed at the start of the season. Tyler Myers too.
But with Tavares, he's not selling at 3x the value of Duchene becuase he's 3x better. He's selling at that rate because theirs more hype, he's supposed to be the next big thing. He's played well enough that there is no reason to think those expectations are unjustified...... so you're going to get a high book & sale value.
Popularity, not performance, is what drives the value of cards. Perform well and your popularity will rise.... and your card values (in theory) should rise too.
Just don't be naive enough to think that on-ice play is going to be the driving force in card prices. Draft position and hype are just as important (if not more so) than actual goals and assists.

Exactly. If it were strictly about on-ice play, Jaroslav Halak would be outselling Carey Price right now. Jaro's been on fire of late and while Carey isn't playing poorly he's only playing well enough to barely lose.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Who was the better player (in their primes) Mike Modano, or Brett Hull?
They were very different players, both HOFers. I could probably say most of those same things if I used them for the same comparisons. Modano was the much better all round player, but I'd take vintage Hull over vintage Modano any day of the week.
Better skater, better Penalty Killer, better passer, so what? Give me that 50 goal sniper any day of the week. Much easier to build around, much easier to market.

here's the thing though, i'm not saying that cause tavares sells 3x more than duchene that means he's 3x better, that would obviously make no sense because then i would be saying crosby is 15x better than parise, obviously not true. i actually think duchene is better...and ik on-ice play isn't the only thing affecting sales, there is more to it like what u have mentioned...but just cause he has hype means he should sell 3x more than someone who was only 2 picks behind him, has the same skills, is on a better team, etc....?
i just think it's funny how some people spend $75 on his yg when they could be taking other alternatives(like buying a box for $60 where u have a chance at all of the big 3) or having the chance of tavares turning into the next patrik stefan, chances of that aren't too likely but stranger things have happened.
