I agree qith the previous comment that Ebay cant really be fully used as a guide as a card that sells for 25 this week can sell for 50 next. People have to remember auctions are liquidations and the card often does not hit full value as the people who want it may not have the money at the time. However Beckett cant really be used as well(especially sets since 2007-08 mcdonalds) what has to be done is a trade equally happy to both sides. A combination of the 2 as one party may be taking bait in return meaning they should be getting ore in return anyways(my opinion)

Thanks all for your replies.
I do understand where everyone is coming from, except from the Vintage guys, as I know I have very little knowledge for cards made before 1990 ( I was only born in 85 )
Like most of you, I do use both beckett ... and completed ebay sales to determine the value of my cards.
I just find it sooooo much harder to trade with people that only go by beckett value, opposed to people that only go by sale values.

sale value is too much of a variable for me to rely on....book value is a basis to stay a bit more consistent. You may pay next to nothing for the same card I will pay a lot for.....thus Ebay.....sell value is only what someone will give you for it.....demand..or no demand.....again, too variable. Book value is what I trade by......

But what is book value determined by if not real market value? ebay is the most up to date real market value determination available. I trade by book but only cuz thats the standard. I would much prefer to trade based on an ebay or even a hybrid book/ebay basis.

Recently I've been going with my gut and deals that feel good. My OPG subscription expired in December and I'm not looking back. Though it's only been two years since I've been back in this great hobby I feel as though I've got my finger on the pulse and can tell what a card is worth and what it is worth to me. It helps me greatly that I am in no small part responsible for setting the market on my main two PC players - I know what to expect when I see a Price auto or GU listed these days because I've picked up so many of them in recent months. I've passed on offers that I feel are out of whack because a certain card is listed as being either too high or too low, and since I do keep a pretty close watch on what's happening over at the great flea market in the cyberspace sky it's pretty easy to get a good feel for a card's true worth.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Agreed 100%. Unless those sort of traders really have something I want, I tend to avoid those traders.

Like game8 said, ebay is a liquidation and often doesnt show true value, but at events like card shows, or even at any LCS, cards usually sell higher then ebay, so everything has to be factored into becketts listings (even though i still agree the last couple years have been OUT TO LUNCH from beckett)

I have two pet peeves and here they are.
So just say that the average person charges $3 to ship a card on ebay. So say that a card ends for $1 on ebay. Are you then going to say that card sold for $1 or $4? I think that when looking at lower end cards that sold on ebay you have to put that into the equation. I am sure that you could go out today and buy 100 cards all for $0.99 or less. The problem is when you have to pay the extra $300 to ship them to you.
My other pet peeve is when BV's seem to be at random like it has been mentioned a lot before I just wrote it down. So take Hot Prospects and Series One both from Upper Deck. Say that you pull a common jersey card. One set it has a BV of $4-5 and the other a BV of $8-10. Now both you get two jersey cards(on average) per box. They both are pretty close to the same price range as well. Why is it that one is worth double what the next one is? Yes I will admit that Series One is more popular but I think you guys get my point.

Sell value is the way to go...i'm sure we all know who makes "book value"
People in suits and ties sitting in an office, and have probably no clue on the hobby, any of us could do a MUCH better job than them...
And no offense to anyone but i dont care what anyone says, no one is trading a card that books 100 and sells 10 for a card that books 100 and sells 50, when you could sell the $50 card, buy the $10 and have $40 left overHidden Content

We should really come out with a new magazine that has current(ebay and here) sales on it. Make it a group magazine and not have one person to look up all of the pricing. Just an idea.
