making money is definetly hard, you just got have a nose for buying the right stuff and reselling i guess
there have been a couple lots ive bought that people unloaded that i made a nice bit on, example, last year i bought a lot off a guy on another forum for 160$USdlvd as he needed the funds quick and i saw the oppurtunity, so i bought it, got to keep 3 - 4 leafs cards for my PC (kulemin rookie materials, tlusty young gun, wendel clark gu) and sold the rest of the lot for a total of 300$US
but u might catch a break like that once every blue moon, but thats about it

A lot of you guys have said that their is no money to make in this hobby. I feel that you guys are wrong. What I will do is search all hockey cards that are ending soonest on ebay and look for steals and go with your gut. Especially if you do that during the day while most people are at work. So here is what I can find ending soonest with just looking at the next 200 auctions ending.
07-08 BAP Marcus Naslund auto $1.04
09-10 SPx Mikko Koivu/Saku Koivu Winning Materials jersey $0.99
09-10 SPx Erik Karlsson auto rookie /799 $15.49
07-08 BAP Daniel Sedin Players Club auto /15 $4.99
08-09 BAP Daniel Sedin auto $0.99
06-07 SPx Dave Tiger Williams Flashback Fabrics $0.99
08-09 SPx Chris Drury jersey /25 $5.61
07-08 BAP Olli Jokinen/Jay Bouwmeester dual auto $1.04
08-09 H+P Michael Del Zotto auto/jersey /19 $11.44
08-09 H+P Michael Del Zotto patch 1/1 $21.01
08-09 H+P Michael Del Zotto patch /19 $7.51
08-09 OPC Premier Ben Bishop (2 patch/2 jersey) auto/rc /15 $15.50
Yes I do realize that you have to pay shipping on them but I see two cards there right now that I will bid on and turn for a profit as long as I can get them at a good price.

Ive cut right down on the amount I spend recently for a couple of reasons;
Firstly, Ive been more interested in collecting enforcer gamers recently - the idea of spending say, $400/500 on a card seems strange when the type of players I collect I can pick up a gamer for less than the price of a card with a little window of patch/jersey, numbered to 10! Or whatever.
Secondly, I think that in terms of enforcer cards/sets/subsets Ive nearly got all the cards I need (please check my sig for cards I still need from older sets!).
So following on from my second point, my spending is basically determined by new releases of cards that contain enforcer subsets. I think Im lucky, in that coming from the UK we dont have B&M stores - if we did, Id be tempted. all my cards come from eBay, HI and, of course, SCF.
Good topic.

I find with all the fees your getting charged to sell on ebay it makes it very hard to buy a card off ebay than turn around and sell it and be ahead.
As far as how much I spend ......MY WIFE SAYS TO MUCH .........they just dont get it, lol

i really have cut down. usually spend 40 bucks a month some times (every other week buy blasters or tons of packs at Wal-mart/target) then usually got 6 hobby boxes to bust during school vacations (spring winter summer) but now down to 20 bucks a month usually and 4 hobby boxes a year

Fun thread to read.
A few thoughts ...
1) Agreed 100% with don't chase the latest & great player/current year cards. Carey Price collectors know what I'm talking about (now). Luckily I learned this lesson about 20 years ago on Todd van Poppel rookie cards.
2) I can make $ on the hobby by following a lot of the practices mentioned above ~ problem is, I fall in love with many of my cards and don't sell them when I should.
3) Only buy cards (players) that you like, so that if you don't sell/make a profit, you still enjoy the cards.
4) Pretty much all the money I make on cards goes right back into buying cards, so technically, I'm not ahead.
5) It's a great hobby to get me through the long winters. My collecting drops off once Spring rolls around and I'm out coaching my son's baseball.
6) I probably spend about $200 / month. Shhh, don't tell my wife.

The past 3 months or so I've spent around 3-400 a month, maybe more. I've spent $450 in the last 3 months on just Kris Russell cards I know for sure.
