I think we all are the same here when it comes to what we want to spend, especially when it comes to what we value out of this hobby. To listen to someone criticize how much you spend especially from another collector seems a bit hypocritical of the other person. How much do they spend? One thing I learned in life that if someone judges what you do, and by using your example Josh, that person is a bit envious, and more than likely jealous. One part bully, and more than likely insecure of themself. I like calling it projecting unto you what they fear and hate of themselves.
I would never listen to someone's criticism, unless it's from someone I trust, and if they really feel it may help me in the end, so on that note, do as you feel necessary, only take criticism if you think it will be helpful.
Sounds like a therapy session, but you reached out buddy.Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd

I get a lot of crap from my parents about my spending. They always harass me for spending money on boxes and not saving and I actually do wish I listened to them so I could easily have 1500+ that I wasted on boxes. On the other hand, I love opening boxes.
Some members on this site are total idiots. I find it makes this site so much more enjoyable to just ignore them. It makes it so they can't PM and it doesn't show their posts. I suggest you just start using it and not worry about what others say.

like cns said my mom and wife dont really know what i spend but it is all extra income i save up and instead of investing in rrsps or in vacations i put it into the hobby. now my dad who does know sometimes tells me to cool off for a bit as the spending can get high at times, but those are the only 3 people who could influence my spending. who cares what other people think in the end, its your money.....i hope lol, and people can do as they please with their hard earned bucks. we dont go around telling people who got cleaned in the recession due to their stocks crashing, names because they spent their money in something terrible in the end. poeple are just getting really dum b lately. i live just outside toronto and all the people taking pictures of transit employees sleeping or going on breaks and posting them on the net is getting ridiculouos so it isnt just happnening in the hobby. i think that new movie coming out soon can some up society the crazies

Hello??? Can you hear me??? Anyone???
In all seriousness though I really do think it's up to the collector to keep it in moderation and as long as you can pay your bills and keep everything else on track then there shouldn't be anything wrong with spending a little extra money on your hobby. For me personally some months I spend around $50 and others up to $450-$500. And I think someone else mentioned that they're friends don't collect and would laugh at them if they knew how much they spend on their hobby, well the same goes for me too with my friends but my friends will go to the bar every weekend and blow around $200 in a night. People will do what they want with there money and that's just the way it goes.Collecting:Leafs Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Conacher, Horner, Broda, Bower, Clark, Gilmour and others.

I'm going to address the original thought in this thread. Someone thinks you are spending too much for a certain player or players. You collect a certain player you admire, plays for your team or maybe you even know them personally. You collect them for a reason. I know some people collect players as they are an investment. None of these reasons are wrong unless you spend more than you can afford. It's not what you spend but do you enjoy what you buy. I have always bought under the philosophy I buy what I like. The most I have spent on a card is around $235 (US) and it is one I'm glad I got because it began a set I really like ( 8 cards in a #/10 set). I just put in a bid for a card close to $300 and was outbid. I own zero mid or high end cards of Crosby, Ovy, Gretzky, Orr, Malkin, Kane, Toews or any other hockey must have. I just recently bought a Howe auto which hopefully will be in soon. No one I know collects or watches hockey. The only person giving me grief for my spending is my wife who does not share my love of the sport, but she keeps me in check. My response is to do what makes you happy and you won't regret it as long as you stay within your means.

I might be one of those people that freaks out at the higher end collectors, but that would only be out of jealousy. I don't have much disposable income, so I mostly collect Inserts and parallels from the early 90's of my team. the most Ive spent total on one card is $10, and that was when I was a kid.

The important thing to note is collecting, reguardless of how much you spend on it is just that...collecting. If some one is gonna chew yer ear off for spending crazy dollars on coated pieces of cardboard, then they are just jealous they cant do that themselves. I mysellf am on a fixed budget on what I can and cant spend, but that dosent give me the right to critisize how much someone else spends on their hobby. Sure I may not have a $10000 Crosby RC(quite frankly I wouldnt want one)but the point is no matter what you spend on the hobby, if your having fun doing it, money should not be an issue

We all spend too much on cards at times probably lol...money spent on cards is better than money spent on crack though I suppose :)
Keep on spending what you feel comfortable spending and try not to worry about other people criticizing your spending habits

Let's be clear-- we're all idiots, but some more than others. I defer to the Isley Brothers:
"It's your thing, do what you want to do."

I hear hell all the time from my girlfriend. I just recently got back into the hobby after a couple months because spending got out of hand.
Like, crack and alcohol, this "hobby" can be described as an addiction and sometimes cost more than the previously mentioned crack and alcohol, lol.
Fact is, I tend to have to spend more because I collect Ovechkin. But I dont collect him because its the cool thing to do, I collect him because I have been a Capitals fan since the late eighties.
I just recently spent about $45 dollars on a dual 2clr swatched Ovie jersey /25 on ebay. To alot of folks I know its "you spent what? on what", but too me, it was a really good price on a card. But on that same day, I watched a 05-06 Hot Materials 2clr go for what I paid for a 3clr of the same card. You just have to know your budget, and set a price on what youll pay for a specific card. Eventually youll find it at the price at some point.
But I can say for the original poster, dont let anyone tell you that you spend to much, or spend money on the wrong person, so long as you can sit down, and look at your collection (which BTW brings up another point of, if youre spending cash, at least admire the stuff every once and awhile) be proud of it and love it, otherwise, move it along and start anew.
