    Box office prices going up

3D movie tickets set for epic price hike

Ticket prices will be going up at movie theaters across the country this weekend as the entertainment industry looks to cash in on growing demand for 3-D movies following the success of "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland."

Starting Friday, prices for adult admission to 3-D movies will increase an average 8.3% at box offices nationwide, according to market research conducted by investment firm BTIG. Ticket prices for IMAX movies are expected to jump 10%, while prices for regular 2-D movies will rise about 4% on average.

That's bad enough, but I didn't realize how bad some people have it:

At one AMC theater in New York, the price for a family of four to see a 3-D screening of Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train your Dragon" this Friday will be $63 before popcorn, soda or candy.

Adult ticket prices for 3-D movies will jump to $15.50 from $13.50 at one theater operated by AMC near Boston. At a Regal theater in Seattle, 3-D ticket prices will rise to $15 from $13.50 for adult admission.

Seriously? $13-15+ for a movie ticket? And I thought $8 was high!

Movie theaters are setting themselves up for a catastrophic fail. Their prices continue to go up and up and up...and technology is making them less and less necessary. At RedBox and now my local video stores, I can get a movie for $1. NetFlix has unlimited movies for $9/month. NetFlix, Hulu, and others now stream movies to your comp for pocket change each and free in some cases. Computer technology improvements and spreading is making it easier for more and more people to take advantage of these advances. And plasma, LCD, LED, projectors, etc are making tvs bigger and better as well. Why are people going to continue to pay higher and higher prices to go out to the movies, when it's much cheaper to stay home and the quality disparity is dropping dramatically?

Craziness...but with all the hype that recent movies have, people will still pay it.

Honestly if they want to see 3D, expect higher price. That's why theres a regular screening as an alternative. It's not surprising to me that 3D & IMAX are that much higher in price. I have gone to multiple shows in IMAX, and a few in regular 3D (if no IMAX option). A family of 4 to a regular movie of say around $10/ticket is $40, so I can understand the price hike. But that's just IMO.

I saw Avatar in extreme 3-D and I thought it was great. 3-D is the way to go to for certain types of movies if you can afford it. The price of tickets was $14.50 a piece. I was lucky enough the theater took the discount movie tickets you can buy at Costco – so we ended up paying $8 or so for two tickets. I normally go out to lunch or dinner before the movie, so I skip buying popcorn and soda. The markup on concession stand food is ridiculous.

I rarely go to the movies unless it's something I really want to see. I'll just pay a dollar and rent the movie from Red Box.

I like going to the movies and all but for 15-20 bucks I'd probably rather rent a couple movies from the Red Box and grab a 12 pack

That's me...I've always loved going to the movies, especially in a nice theater, but there is a point where the price starts affecting how much I want to go and it's getting there...especially during a recession with such high unemployment, this is going to be damaging.

Exactly, it's not that I will go broke paying to go see a movie once in a while or that I don't enjoy going out to the theaters, it's just that when the prices of everything else go down and the prices of going to the theaters go up it's kind of a duh moment for me.
