Penguins Need a Goalie Upgrade
Author: Steven Ovadia
It’s never fair to lay a team’s fortunes at the feet of their goalie since while the goalie is an important position, a lot of factors go into wins and losses.
For instance, Pittsburgh couldn’t get past Montreal, last night and in the series, for a few reasons.
Montreal goalie Jaroslav Halak was super hot. He was very tough to beat.
The Penguins are tired. They’ve played a lot of hockey over the past few seasons. Playoff games. Olympic games. The Penguins looked exhausted for much of the second half of the season and these playoffs and I think it was because all of that extra hockey finally caught up with them.

The Pens goalie situation is fine. Even Pittsburghers (who are remarkably hard on Fleury) realize that it took a team effort to be that bad in a Game 7. The guy is a year removed from a Cup win.

As much as I give Fleury a mulligan this year, he was soft on those 4 goals in game 7. From what I saw, it seems that Pittsburgh needs a shutdown D and a couple of grinders.

The first and fourth goals were bad, but it's hard to blame flower when 3 of those 4 goals were directly attributed to AWFUL turnovers. It was a total team loss, and I agree with you on the shutdown D. They probably won't re-sign Gonchar (will be 37) and could take a shot at Anton Volchenkov.

Agreed. Kunitz needs to get shot. He did a McCabe on - I think - was the second/third goal. But still, fleury should have stopped all 4. As for Gonchar, Pens could maybe pitch to get Kaberle as a replacement.

I hate the Penguins and I feel bad for Fleury after reading that. The guy takes you to 2 straight cup finals and wins one of them and he's giving up on him already?
Every goalie gives up a few softies once in a while, and it sucks that he gave them up in game 7. He might have been the reason they lost game 7 but not the series.
This team was built for offense and couldnt score. That's why they lost the series. That's why the Caps lost their series. The Devils were built for defense and gave up to many goals and so they're gone. Teams are built towards O or D and if your team can't play their game, they wont win.

Perfectly said!!
Fleury is the goalie, 2 cup finals and wins one with great ssaevs and movement in the crease.

No doubt. Pens have some work to do this off-season and have some money to work with (about 17.55 million), after all UFA's. The only two UFA's the Pens will probably try extremely hard to sign would be Cooke and Eaton. Gonchar likely will get paid to go elsewhere--and he may be the most guilty for game 7. I understand he didn't want to take the interference penalty on the Moen goal, but my goodness, he looked like a turnstile.

I think they could use better wingers for Crosby, as well.
2 defensive D and one or two quality wingers.
