Personally I dont even bother buying or using the guide anymore. When I trade on the boards here I trade for what I want/collect, regardless of BV in Becketts. To me their BVs are overly inflated.

1.) We live in the world of instant information. The magazine is outdated in the time it takes to ship from the publisher to retail shelves.

2.) Beckett NEVER revises prices after the "Rookie Rush" ends every year. I've seen cards that would not get a nickel listed at $20 plus

3.) eBay/sale threads are the new price guide. I pay as much for a card as I want depending on the purpose of owning it. If something is PC and never going to move I'll pay as much as I feel is sensible to own it. If I am buying a card to flip (which is not often) I look at past sales.

they never update the prices in the beckett

This is spot on. How many prices do they actually change from issue to issue? Sure, they price the new releases, but how often do you see the price change on a card that was produced as recent as two years ago? The price guide takes up about 75% of the magazine. New listings might take up a page of that 75%. That means they just keep putting out the same 80 pages every issue.

It would be great if a magazine actually tabulated ebay sales over a several month period and reported those numbers as card values.

My newest Beckett is from 2007 - They don't list all the sets anymore and if I ever pay $50 for a yearly hockey card price guide I have left instructions with friends to shoot me.

I used to like the Beckett for looking up old sets (like Pacific or Pinnacle) to see how many parallels there were or how scarce a set/card was. Now it seems if it isn't worth a bunch they don't list it. That is the way it was getting in 2007 when I stopped buying them anyway.

You can also ask your local hobby shop to start carrying them, especially if you pick one up, and you like it.

Pretty disappointed with the magazine... Are most traders online subscribers?
