    Good luck with this buddy!

I have actually dropped 30 pounds since going away to college (which is normally the opposite, I guess most people gain about 15 pounds their freshman year). The way I did it was cutting way down on pop. I now only have maybe 1 a day, but the majority of the time I don't have any during the day.

Another thing that happened was I found out my gall bladder was not working properly. This actually made me less hungry, so I eventually just started eating much smaller portions. Now even when I feel good, I eat the smaller portions because I am so used to not eating much.

I actually went shorts shopping a couple weekends ago, and I realized that I dropped 2 pant sizes. It made me feel pretty good. Also, your energy level will go up, and all together you will feel better.

Diabetes runs in my family, so I want to try to cut down on my chances of it setting in at an early age.

Which kind? Type 1, type 2, or both? I ask because most of the populace isn't aware that there are different types. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have some genetic basis, but only type 2 can potentially be prevented through diet and exercise. Type 1, on the other hand, is much rarer and can happen to young, active individuals, including infants. The cause is not insulin resistance, but complete destruction of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (islets of Langerhans) through an autoimmune reaction, typically following a viral or bacterial infection (the immune system mistakenly attacks organ cells rather than the infectious cells).

Good deal. If you can just get started and stay motivated for the first couple weeks, it gets easier. You start to see yourself lose weight, and it just keeps you motivated to continue losing. Best of luck to you, buddy.

Good luck with your goals. I have found if the motivation is there that is a major start. Someone also mentioned about vitamins which I agree per day. I like the running/walking start but here is a suggestion -- put some kind of weight training in there too.

Man I am pulling for you as I am in my own little training program and I know how hard it can be and it sounds like you are headed in the right direction. One day at a time.

Type 2. My grandmother wasn't diagnosed until she was 60 and my mom in her early 50's.

In reading all the stuff about jogging, walking, etc., don't be afraid to hit the weights. Most exercise regimens say to alternate days of weights and cardio. Adding muscle weight or even just toning up will result in more effective fat burning-- even more than doing cardio.

Echoing myself, look into the Abs Diet. You can even just Google stuff on it and go from there instead of buying the book. A lot of it (the power foods, easy recipes, and the workout) is online.

Good luck man! Also I want to point something out to you- it matters where you get those 2200 calories from. If you get all of that from like white pasta you might actually gain weight. The key to losing is cutting out the high glycemic carbs which will cause your insulin to spike, thus putting the burning of fat on hold.
