Rima, I think your saying about beckett prices are just a guide to what can be done is the best statement for that.. Autos of legendary players sell for close to bv((Im PAYING close to BV for an auto of Ray Nistchke))..... Its hard to say what determines % of value a person may sell for though.

Imma go hunt for the ebay one at $7.99 sounds like a steal to me :)

lol I would read all of your posts but I would get bored:
Heres my opinion on it.
I think we are in some aspects ruining the values of cards. With eBay and online trading these days your sure to lower it a little with all of the dealers out there trying to sell their cards. One person wants to sell the same card another guy has for $8 then the other guy will want to put his lower. Not only us are lowering the prices, the company their selves are. They mass produce GU and Autos so they can make a lot of money off people buying their packs, but in all reality with their mass production its lowering card prices. I would still say eBay is the worse, yesterday I couldve got a GU card (BIN) for $2.51 shipped because there were so many on sale the guy put the BIN price at 0.01$. SCF and other trading boards is the same way, people trade equal BV but dont buy at BV. Same reason as eBay, people want to sell their cards ASAP.
My opinion on paying and not paying BV for cards is all what you want to do. If you want a card of a hot player your going to try your hardest to win it. If your worried about paying over BV, why? You shouldnt be going by Becket you should go by your own pricing system. I bought a 2001 Dick Allen Topps Golden Anniversery Autograph for $28 when it booked $25 at the time. But I needed it for my PC and it was a rare find so I was quite happy with the win, and I knew it was rare, since I bought it the price rose up to $40.
Just my opinions.

i dont think we are ruining anything... i think we are bringing the hobby back down to "affordable"
also.. isnt it nice to be able to pick up a limited auto of your favorite player that 5 years ago would have gone for 200 bucks for 30 bucks on ebay?

I know alot of cards, like you said Jay (of HOF's) sell real well, near BV over BV all day. Same goes with players like Jerome Bettis, Curtis Martin, Ray Lewis, etc. You are going to have to be willing to pay near full BV for one of their autos.
I have to agree with tutall....I have had cards in my collection I would have never thought possible 5 years ago.
Beckett is out of whack, and I would be happy to see it dry up and go away for good, but that won't happen anytime soon :(
Peace~

Sounds to me like some of you weren't active in the card market 10+ years ago. I sold most of my singles (the first few years I was open) for Beckett HI routinely. When I needed something for the shop, I bought it at 50% (sometimes more) of Beckett HI from one of my customers. Now, with all the increased competition, I don't even buy cards from customers any more. How can I?
Most of you have just stated that you would NEVER pay full book for a card. Well, now that the world has been brought into my back yard via Ebay and the like, most of my customers won't either. Yet, they come in wanting to sell their cards for 50% or higher. Ha ha ha, that just does not work. That's what drives me nuts. If you plan on paying 20-30% of guide, then don't expect much when you go to SELL your cards either. Of course, this is in the brick n mortar retail store world that is quickly disappearing.
I can't sell most singles for even close to Beckett HI any more, so obviously I can't afford to buy them for much either. The singles market has been all but destroyed for us shop owners. I'm not complaining. It's just the facts. I've accepted this as part of being a small town card shop owner. Is it frustrating? You betcha. Singles used to be my specialty. Now I carry a limited amount for the few customers that still look for them.
Definetely a more complicated market nowadays. It's all about adjusting and surviving in this day and age of increased competition. It can be done, but unfortunately we are losing card shops at an alarming rate. Of course, one could argue that in the current situation maybe nobody needs their local card shop any more. Hmmmmmm.

Its a monopoly, if beckett states a card is 100 dollars the prices of packs will also go up. I love getting packs but its not worth it anymore

I just bought a handful of Certified Mirror Gold autos (#/25) for about $8 each, and 7 Elite's from 2005 Donruss (#/1500) for $1.50 each. It seems it's definitely becoming a hobby again, unless you have the ability to break a couple cases of each product and can sell the higher-demand autos and game-used I don't see how anyone can make it a business anymore.
