everybody saying they need to do something.. what do you want them to do? use metal bats?
This is a freak accident. Never in the past 150 years has this happened till now. Man one little thing and everyone goes off. Look I really feel bad for colvin it sucks that it happened but it happened. What are you gonna do. Bats break, and someone got smacked this time. Its part of the game.
If you play football you can get pushed back high, and hit low and break your spine. Whats the Nfl gonna do, not allow more tha none player to hit a player at the same time?
Its a 1 in a million shot and part of the game .Nothings gonna change because nothing has to be changed.

Well it's funny you should question why everyone says something needs to be done, because Bud Selig even says they're looking into solutions for the broken bat problem.
I'm not suggesting they switch to metal bats and I (as I presume everyone else does as well) realizes wood breaks - it's just part of the game. But you'll recall there was that season a couple seasons ago where every game there were at least three broken bats usually every game. I'm not suggesting they take wood bats out of the game, but look into how they're made...or look into which wood breaks the least and switch every bat to that. Apparently the one that hit Colvin was Maple and his notorious for breaking - don't let players use maple then would be a start.
I think if a bat breaks and hits a fan you'd see a lot more hype than what happened to Colvin.

even that is extreme. I mean as I said. Baseball's been played for over 100 years. This has happened once.

Well it only took one pitch to get the spitball banned and the rule in place that a clean baseball has to be used (Ray Chapman died when the ball hit his head), it only took one pitch to get rule in place where coaches have to wear helmets on the field (when Mike Collbaugh died from the foul ball line drive), it only took one pitch to get the walls padded on the field (after Michael Powers ran into the unprotected wall fielding a popup and died later due to injuries).
I realize Colvin didn't die from his injuries but his injury could have been much worse (if it hit him in the head), or if it just punctured deeper. Like I said, I'm not suggesting they switch to metal bats, but maybe just require all players to use bats that shatter less (in other words, no maple bats)

I think having to use a clean baseball is a pretty significant part of how the game is played....
