I agree Mauer needs to keep it up, but he is on a blazing trail to Cooperstown. Yes he is only 27, but he has 6 full seasons under his belt with an MVP, 4 all-star games, 3 batting titles, and 2 gold gloves. What makes this 100x more impressive, he is a catcher. If he does this for just 4 or 5 more years the guy is in.

Jeff Kent keeps being mentioned because he is one of the greatest if not the greatest hitting Second Basemen of all time.
Also, what do you guys think of Juan Gonzalez? If it weren't for the steroids do you think he would be in?

During the period in which he played Gonzo's numbers are pretty standard. Look at Albert Belle. No one ever brings him up for the Hall and he compares pretty well. Power hitters of that time needed 500 HR or 3,000 hits or something else to define them.
I guess if home runs make someone the best hitter at their position then Kent is the best. There are 8 second basemen in the hall with batting averages above .300 though and 3 of them have over 3,000 hits. For being the best hitting or one of the best hitting second baseman of all-time you'd think he would have made more than 5 all-star games and won more than 4 silver sluggers. He has no gold gloves and only 90 stolen bases. Out of 17 second baseman in the hall only 5 have less than 100 steals. Just my opinion, though. That's why these discussions are fun.

I threw kent out there because he was mentioned in a thread i had on the bench. Looks like he's got some support here, but probably not enough by those that vote to make it.
And I guess steroids are gonna color a lot of guys from this era.Always trading for HOF Autos and Gued I need for my PC. I trade bv:bv, more or less. Heavily your way my regular issues,inserts, parallels for your hof autos that I need.

Gonzo would be one of those guys who would have to slip in real late in his eligibility.. Even then I just dont see it. Not 500 hr, not 2000 hits. Not even a .300 ba. I mean yea hes close on them all, but he doesnt have one of those.
Course this would all be without roids.. but we dont have to worry bout it at all lol

It is because of his position....people seem to forget that a position actually does matter a lot when determining if somebody is a HOF player or not. Joe Mauer being a catcher makes him a lot more valuable than if he played first base or right field and put up those numbers.
If you compare Jeff Kent to the 10 most comparable players it looks like this:
1. Dave Parker (820)
2. Jim Rice (819) *
3. Chipper Jones (812)
4. Luis Gonzalez (811)
5. Ryne Sandberg (802) *
6. Andres Galarraga (798)
7. Ron Santo (794)
8. Carlton Fisk (789) *
9. Billy Williams (789) *
10. Ernie Banks (787) *
Everyone with an "*" has made the Hall of Fame. Chipper should make the HOF and Santo is very close if not one. The other 3 players are guys who played either first or the outfield while Kent played a light hitting 2nd base.
Basically based on his stats alone Kent isn't a HOF player but because of his position it makes him a borderline candidate. If he played first base his whole career nobody would be talking about Kent for the HOF.Selling all my cards here updated as of May------------> Hidden Content

Those are 10 most comparable hitters, not all around players.
Jim Rice- took 15 tries to get in proving borderline
Sandberg- 9 gold gloves. He would not be in based on hitting alone.
Fisk- only 1 gold glove, but he was a catcher, and that single HR has a place in history
Billy Williams- The guy played decades ago, and he is comparable hitter. Kent played in the live ball to the max era.
Ernie Banks- the guy is legend. No one needs to say how he separates himself from Kent.
Kent is at best borderline. If he played defense or didn't do all his damage while the rest of the league was also cranking home runs I'd give him more credit.

I believe Kent definitely is a Hall of Famer. Almost 2500 Hits, 377 Home Runs (Most of any 2nd baseman I believe), 5x AS, 2000 NL MVP, 4 Silver Sluggers. All as a second baseman and I believe he is the greatest power hitting second baseman in history.
