One more point of clarification on this - teams are allowed to send an offer sheet to the RFA at any point starting July 1st, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Many times this summer Carey Price and his agent stated flatly that they would not sign any offer sheets sent their way as a way to force Montreal's hand in the negotiation process. Only if the player signs the sheet does the fun process begin. The original rights-holding team has one week to match the offer sheet, and if they do not, the compensation chart listed above comes into effect.

Now that is a player that wants to stay with their team.....Regardless of how much money he makes, his loyalty is with his team....

A lot of it came down to his pride - he wanted to show everybody, himself included, that he could make it in Montreal and that he deserved it. Personally I'm loving seeing all the crow-eating happening at Habs Inside/Out so far this year. :)

doughty won't go anywhere. his favorite team growing up was the Kings and DL put a limit on how much he could spend this summer (kovalchuk) in order to have enough cap space to re-sign doughty.

unless someone offers him $7M+/season he won't be going anywhere. and that means they would also have to give up 4 first round picks as well. knowing Detroit and their love of draft picks, i just don't see that happening.

this is exactly why i've been saying how smart DL is. as tempting as it may have been to go out and sign the flashy scorer this summer he didn't want to put himself in a position like that 'Hawks were this summer. they had to dump a bunch of players and SJ made the offer sheet for Hjalmarsson. DL has doughty, johnson and simmonds coming up so he's left himself plenty of room. the only one that may leave is Johnson if he wants some sort of crazy deal.

Oh believe me, I know Doughty isn't going anywhere. I was just curious to see what would have to happen, hypothetically.

i actually don't think it will come down to an offer sheet as i'm pretty sure Doughty will be locked up before the end of the season.

i am hoping he'll take a duncan keith-like deal. he is worth $7M+/season but hopefully he'll put the team first and take a lower cap hit so they can keep johnson as well.
