I've only been in 3 NHL arenas, Saddledome in Calgary, Rexall in Edmonton, and Bell Centre in Montreal.
The Bell Centre had the best layout and was the nicest (and the newest by probably 2 decades) but I had pretty high seats and the game just didn't have the atmosphere I was hoping for (it was a day game).
I like the Dome as a venue for hockey but the sound at concerts can be brutal if your not in the first 10 rows of the 2nd Level, or lower. The wait for bathrooms at intermissions can be ridiculous at times. Atmosphere is amazing when the team makes the playoffs, but regular season games can be eerily quiet sometimes.
And Rexall... well, its old... Seen some amazing concerts in the building and the sound is great but other than that, the arena is pretty seedy.

Been to a few Columbus, Nashville, Carolina, Atlanta, and Tampa. Of all my favorite it would be Nashville for the live music played in between periods. Might sound stupid but to me it better than some of the crazy events arean put on between periods.

Madison Square Garden, for the fans, the history, ease of access, views of the ice and, of course, the great Irish Pubs within a block of the arena.

I've only been to the Joe(Joe Louis Arena) and the United Center. While the United Center wasn't terrible, nothing can top the atmosphere of the Joe. Yeah, it's a dump, but it's one of the best places to see a hockey game.
