    Smile Own the Leafs!

    Own the Leafs

This is certainly an interesting concept. There are stories all over Canada and the Internet. Would you be willing to give up $1000 if this really is legit? Of course it really depends on a lot of different things but it seems like it might have a shred of possibility. I didn't know the Green Bay Packers were community owned.

When the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan announced earlier this month that they are selling their 66-percent stake (estimated at $1.3 billion) in Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, the sports business world was abuzz.
Enter businessman Darren Thompson, who grew up in New Brunswick and now lives in Alberta. This man has an idea. It's an idea he believes enough Leafs fans can get behind. It's an idea that his website specifically states in its FAQ is "not a scam".
Thompson's idea is to get the support of one million people to donate $1,000 to purchase the 66-percent stake in MLSE that's for sale.
That's $1 billion dollars with which to enter into the bidding for MLSE.

not at all. All it would be is small bragging rights. Why would you put money towards some kind of business or property when it will be too small for you to take part in any of the decision making

    Not a chance.

*IF* something like this would happen, I would imagine it would follow a model similar to Green Bay.

As a Shareholder, you would get a vote when it comes to electing a board of directors.... but that's where your involvement ends. No profits. No financial perks. No extra access to seats.

For your $1000 you'd get a cool looking piece of paper, and bragging rights. Nothing else.

1/1,000,000th of 66%? What does that even work out to?
    Big fat nothing.

You'd be paying $1000 to own 0.00000001 % of the Toronto Maple Leafs? I would do It for a charitable cause but only if I had the money lol

Haha I actually know Darren Thompson! He's a member at the local golf course. Let's just say not a chance. The guy is a total goof! He's really taken his "smarts" to a whole new level this time lol

Well it looks as if they have $50 million in pledges so far and word is spreading fast. From the voting on here it doesn't look to promising for them haha. Anyone else want to weigh in?

If it proved legitimate, I would do it in a heartbeat. You are not going to find a better "Blue chip" investment. Like them or not, they are a money-making venture with nothing but upside growth.

I don't think it's all that attractive from a personal or investment standpoint.

Sure, the Leafs currently produce some nice return for the teachers' union, but I don't know if the franchise is really worth close to $2 billion. They weren't even listed above the $1 billion mark in the last Forbes survey if I remember correctly. They would likely pay some decent dividends assuming that everything continues to run smoothly, but there are other investments out there where I'd rather put my money. There are many franchises that seem more attractive.

On a persona level, I don't see the attraction of owning less than one one-millionth of a sports franchise. Sure you get a vote for the Board of Directors, but it's not like any of us commoners are going to end up being elected. And if we did, I'm not sure how qualified many of us would be when it comes to running a large business like this one.

Seems like just another silly excuse for someone to get their 15 minutes.
