I remember the Eric Fichaud hype all too well. He was slow to develop and never reached the potential he was thought to have. I remember when the Islanders gave him a try for a while... it didn't last too long.

    From Hockey Reference:

    http://www.hockey-reference.com/play...fichaer01.html

His draft was one of the worst first rounds in the history of the Milky Way Galaxy. Only two players from that first round went on to score more than 500 points (Ryan Smyth, Jeff Friesen) ... Jason Bonsignore was a COLOSSAL fail by Edmonton at #4, Brett Lindros was a bust at #8 and three other guys never saw a single NHL game.

The most prolific player in the entire draft didn't get picked until the sixth round (Daniel Alfredsson).

Elias went 51st in the 2nd round of that draft, that'd be the first player of significance taken in my books. Terrible draft year though, I remember it well. I remember the Oilers being torn between Ryan Smyth, Wiemer and Botteril with their 2nd of the two high picks, and boy did they make the right choice after botching the first!
