Discussion Topic: Patch Sets
As you all know, I am working on the 09-10 The Cup set and at this point, I am about 80% done with the /249 Patches from this set (after securing a Tyler Ennis this morning!!)
However, I started thinking about this and if I were to complete the entire set 1-180, there is only 99 possible set that can be built from The Cup.
My question: Does it TRULY matter on the quality of patches when the print run on completing a set is a low number?

Yes and no.
No, because completing a patch set such as The Cup is a pretty major accomplishment on its own.
Yes, because if you've got nothing but plain white patches (which obviously I know you don't) it somewhat diminishes the lustre of it all. It's not like the Toews OPCP 1/1 from his rookie year (might have been Kane?), where the only card made has 4 all-white patches on it so there's no upward mobility there. If there's some crazy cool multi-coloured pieces sprinkled throughout it makes for a more visually appealing display.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

my two cents (barely two cents with this exchange rate)
From an accomplishment standpoint, having some single colored patches (or ALL single colored patches for that matter) in your set matters little. You managed to put together something that very few people will accomplish, let alone even attempt.
From an aesthetic perspective, you might want to have some multi-colored patches in your set.
Me? I would prefer have a card of a specific player in a single colored patch rather than no card of that player at all.
Any way you look at it, finishing the cup set would be/will be quite an accomplishment!

I don't think so. I would focus on getting 100% of the cards and then, if you have the funds, upgrading the patches as time goes on.

I was going to give the standard yes/no answer.
You bolded "TRULY" though.
So it matters. Absolutely, 100%. If you set out to do a multicolour patch set of the Cup and then when you start hitting the /99 copies and it becomes hard to finish it... don't cop out, keep going. Pay the extra $$, go the extra mile, hunt the card owner.
When its all said and done and you're sitting at one card left and you know there's this all-white patch available from your bloke who's selling it cheap, you let it go and find the one you need. When you get it and that set is finally complete and you know you never gave up and never settled for second string just to say "I'm done, sorta", it'll make that set way more special.
If you ever posted a show and tell set of the cup, you'll get your oohs and aahs. If you post a complete multicolour set, those oohs and aahs won't get any ooh-ier or aah-ier, but the quality will show through and you'll feel better about the journey and the goal.
Plus, if you've read this far and if you're on the fence, then the fact that I've said all this will potentially ruin any chance at enjoying a non-completely-multicolour set, so you might as well go for the multicolour set now anyways.
Whichever way you decide to go, GL!
Cheers,

I would say no the quality of the patch. if you can get your hands on a low numbered rare card go for it.

You should try to complete the set first, then you can replace patch cards with others that feature better swatches. It's better to have 100% of a set with normal/good patches than have 65% of a set with amazing patches.

+ another 1
BUT...upgrading patches may become a tricky thing to do if you take into consideration is the fake patches - you know, the ones with 16 colours and 48 colour breaks...!!
Good Luck!
