not everyone is in it to make money, some people are still in it for a hobby. as hobbies go it can be great, to try paying the bills it can be a real pain

It's just plain fun; you never know what you might pull.

If nobody bought boxes, there wouldn't be much to do around these parts.

I cannot see the value in it aside from the thrill of opening packs.

The thrill of opening packs. You said it right there. I buy much fewer boxes now than I used to. Many are too expensive and there is only one LCS in my area and that one is 40 miles away. I tend to focus more on player collecting and buying just the singles I need.

That said, I still buy some boxes and loose packs. I know the blaster boxes at target don't yield many hits, but I still love tearing into them!

If people didn't buy boxes there would be no singles to buy. It's a give and take relationship that keeps the hobby going.

I'll be buying my first hobby boxes since I got back into things last year tomorrow. Still not sure if I should buy 2 boxes of 08-09 spx, or one box of this years contenders or a few UD series 1 since this past year was chock full of juicy rookies. But what'll be fun is opening the boxes and packs with my best friend from childhood who used to collect to and is back in town visiting for a week, it's for the nostalgia factor but also fun, and my wife also likes opening the packs and getting the jerseys and autos (especially if they're canucks players)

I LOVE boxes. I just can't affords them for the most part. The Wal-Mart sells a blaster box of 16 mixed packs for $26.99, mostly Upper Deck stuff from the past 2 or 3 years. Out of the 3 I've bought (1 a month, I try to spend my money on my kids, I SWEAR) I've pulled a UD Victory Crosby RC, a UD Artifacts J.S. Giguere 4/5 parallel and a Tiger Williams UD Game Jersey card. And that's just fine by me!

I buy boxes for the hope I might get something I want to keep. I use cards from the boxes to get other cards. I see it as just getting traders.

I find it fun, the thrill of opening packs/boxes is just a fun hobby/activity for me. I also buy singles on ebay, it just depends. Like with the PC thing again, if i reallly need something I have a slim chance of getting. but other than that I think the opening is the best part.
