First time submission to PSA: Not good.

    Hi there,

I am new to this forum and I was hoping for some advice from the experienced collectors that submit to PSA or other grading services.

I joined the club last month and sent in my first submission of 6 cards. The results populated and there were 4 9's, a 7, and a 7.5. The 9's I could live with, not unexpected there.. The 7.5 is a mystery, but not critical since I have a Gem Mint 10 in my collection of that card (Sandberg 1983 Topps).

The 7 was a Ryne Sandberg 1981 TCMA OK City minor league card. This card was beautiful. I thought at worst an 8, but probably a 9. This was my favorite card in the submission and I am pretty bummed about it.

How do you deal with the disappointment of getting your cards returned with grades really below a reasonable expectation?

I am hesitant to send other cards in for fear of a low grade, and rather just wait for the card to appear on eBay to buy in the grade I find acceptable. These cards were all for my pc. Thanks!

I submit to PSA constantly, here's my advice:

    1. Hopefully the 9s will offset your disappointment and get you financial gain to make up for the disappointing grade or grades

    2. If you really think you were wronged, crack it out of the case and resubmit it. I had a Tiger Woods auto once that I had cracked out of a BGS 9.5 to get a PSA 10 and it came back a PSA 9. So, I carefully cracked it out of the case, sent it back into PSA, and it came back a 10.

I've yet to send cards in for professional grading although I will one day.

Keep expectations on an even keel:)

    [quote=michael.petkus;10006873]Hi there,

Well, as you probably know, those older (80's) cards are really tough to grade. Most of the time, the surface is what brings it down (in my experiences.)

As far as your quote above, man.....I've been bummed so many times sending my cards to BGS. I love BGS, but I just have bad luck. I have sooooo many cards that came out .05 away from gem mint 9.5. Ughhhh....makes me sick! 9.5, 9.5, 9.0,.............9.0. Story of my card grading life. Although, I've been lucky on 1 or 2.
How do you deal with it? I don't know. lol. Some people re-submit them. I'm not sure if that works....never tried, but been tempted! Good luck with your future grades! I sent 5 out for the first time in 2 yrs. Should be coming back in a week. I'll try to keep my expectations low ;)

Thank you for all of the comments so far. Here is the card I was referring to. The scan is not the best, but I feel like there were 4 sharp corners, no issues with the edges, and the surface looked clean. Centering may be a bit off, but again, I thought that was its only flaw, and an 8 or lucky 9 was what I was thinking.

it is a nice looking card the odd thing with alot of these companies and I don't know if everyone has this or just me being odd again. I've cracked them out resubmitted the same card withing a few days of getting them back and almost always comes back a higher grade. Sometimes I think it also depends on the grader you get some I think account for the overall quality of those cards from that run and what they have seen. and Some grade a t205 like its a 2011 tribute. You just never know.

Does PSA give a breakdown of any subgrades?

    Centering
    Corners
    Surface
    etc...

I do think the card look clean all the way around, but have a question that might be the reason for the lower grade, the black border looks like there is ink spots or missing ink, like you say scan not that good and that what i see might be the anwser for the grade.
