I'm definitely a quantity guy and happy to get any card to add to the collection but I look forward to some cards arrivals a little more than others

    Quality for me too

Its just like in the NHL, the team that gets the better player is usually considered the "winning" team. Unfortunatly thats how the hobby works now too

The "Winning team" in the hobby are the people that ENJOY their collection, no matter what it consists of.

Harri - No idea what that one is! Obviously from the 90s so I feel like I should know, lol.

As for the topic - Why can't you have both? I'm not going to lie..... I like my limited Logos cards much more than my Pro Set base, but that doesn't mean I don't want to keep the Pro Set base cards.

The hardest cards to get at times are the base cards. If you bust packs you are OK but if want to trade for them they are some of the hardest ones to get in.

People just don't want to send them. You can see them but can't get them in hand. (like window shopping at a closed store)

I have seen it from both perspectives and collected both ways when I used to dabble in other players.

For the Rob Blake and Forsberg collections I have always grabbed everything. Base, parallel, auto, game used, doesn't matter, if it's on the list I want it and chase it.

For my son Austin's burgeoning collection of his buddy Anze Kopitar he is the same, he wants what he doesn't have. The problem is with so many cards, he doesn't always realize what he does have so I have to keep him informed.

Basically, if I see two cards of equal value he does not have, I let him pick which one he wants more be it a patch versus auto, etc. I just don't show him the same cards he already has, even if it is an "upgrade" because he wants ALL of them of his boy Kopi.

I am about to start a Mike Richards collection once he has cards issued depicting him as an LA King.

I have yet to decide if this will be a full blown, all out hunt for everything a la Rob Blake and Peter Forsberg, or if I will be selective and focus on certain areas or types of cards?

I guess it all depends what you're looking to do and the time and money you have to invest. If you have enough money and time, I say chase it all.

If you're on a limited budget, go for quantity with the occasional nice piece thrown in.

Or if you have money but minimal time, grab the nice stuff that catches your eye.

As long as you're content at day's end that's all that matters!

    Great advice :)

There is no right way or wrong way to collect a player. I understand why people don't like base cards, or don't care about parallels. If you like them, don't collect them..... and don't let anyone tell you that your collection is any worse becuase of it.

On the other hand, if you love base & parallels.... and only want the occasional Auto or Game Used who is anyone else to quesiton you?

So long as you're happy, it's a good way to do it.

I'm with you on that, I love having nice high enders in there, but going through a stack of 200 base cards of your favorite player is still just as much fun as staring at one auto/patch, but gives you a heck of a lot more to appreciate. You need to take the time to look at a little bit of everything, from an unnumbered auto, to an Immortal inks, from an old school base card to a NPDTS card out of The Cup. It's about what you collect, and why you collect it, not about who has the most cards or the most expensive cards, but about YOUR cards, what you have and why you love it. I'm split straight down the middle on this one.
