over pricing? over waiting?
I know you can sell your cards for what you want, but i was looking on ebay and found one seller in particular whose cards are way over priced and obviously does not look at previous sales. Most of these cards are from 3 years ago and have been on ebay for that long . These cards are not of hot players either. My question is, why have a card that sold for 50 dollars brand new , and multiple copies went around the price , with a buy it now of 300? I dont think that is good for the seller or buyer. Here is a offer date i put in on such card --May-30-09 11:33:21 PDT--- 2009? One offer in 3 years, i would think that would mean the price is way too much? Maybe the seller does good, but most of his items are like this, what gives?

Very easy. Setbuilders might go crazy over that one card the misses. Same with player collectors sometimes you miss a card and "need" it. They might not sell it for a while but they could end up selling it overpriced.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be one of a couple sellers in the Ontario region known for their massive quantities of top-shelf ITG cards. As I always say, it only takes one person to enter a bid on a card listed in that fashion...
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Yeah, there's two of those sellers for me that have a stash of nice ITG cards of Mike Murphy and Comeau, and their prices never come down.

I would say one of two reasons;
a) Some sellers have a tonne of listings and it takes a lot of work and time to update the prices all the time (I used to run about 300 auctions and that can take an afternoon to update)
b) hoarders grab all the cards they can get from a SP and sit on them until someone gives up waiting and just buys it. Ebay allows you to list in the BIN function for next to nothing. They are not losing anything by letting them sit there except for tying up cash.
Either way, not good business. But something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it /endOldSaying

Some count on compulsive buyer that will finally hit the buy it button just to finally get the one card.
I collect Carey Price and there are ton of sweet cards I never will be able to buy due to the ridiculous price they ask.
A sheild at 6,000+ etc, no thanks. I think we just need to realise we can't get them all and if we fall for the one seller ask too much then you shoot yourself in the foot.
I get the card I can afford and forget about all others. I have some very sweet cards and I don't feel much better because I add more beautifull cards.
You either control the hobby or the hobby control you...

its rediculous when you see some things, especially when u really want it but cant comprehend paying the price. I did it once buying a 1/1 for about 2.5x the price it should have been but its a 1/1 and its not like theres any other options. Like coolhandluke said its control or be controlled and sometimes it gets the best of you and u end up spending what u dont want. But like the original post some listings just dont make any sense, for example i will never understand this one i saw last week thats still up and running

But i guess some people have their strategies, ill just never understand them

for example, seller has the card listed for 300 buy it now/BO..The auction has been up since early 09. The card sold around 50-70 when demand was high/new, i put an offer of 75 today and the offer was declined within a few hours. Seller didnt even counter offer. Ive had the only offer in 3 years. I can see a rare card for a set after a year or two, but 3 years? the set collectors have probably moved on. Will this last for 3 more years plus? I dont need the card, i simply wanted it for my collection and was willing to over pay a little if he counter offered but they seemed to not want to deal with me. Im not offering 10 dollars on a 50 dollar card, im offering above what they went for!
