Should Rules Governing Rookie Cards Be Changed?
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam It has happened to all of us, either directly or vicariously through watching someone break a box of the latest product. We have all experienced at one time or another that terrible feeling that creeps up the back of your head when you come to the Three NHL Games and

Beckett does not follow the NHL rules as it is now.
I follow the Card Manufacturers Rules.
99-00 Crown Royale's first card of Luongo says Rookie on it, that's all I need to know as they are the ones that produced it, and that is his first CR card. Vive la Manufacturers, down with Beckett.

"...nor do I find it a key selling point for a product to boast 200 rookie cards on the checklist..."

I'd like to see RCs insertedly randomly into the set like they used to be. Put a 'Rookie" or "Young Guns" on it, fine, but compiling all the rookies at the end of a set annoys me. I miss the days of card # 123 being a RC between two veterans, almost like he's an actual member of the league.

Good article, Richard, thanks!! I agree with you that rookie cards are too plentiful and that it would be nice to have stricter rules on who gets a card and who doesn't. The market wouldn't die from having to wait a month or two more.

great article Richard, would make sense to cut down on the rookies, especially in insert sets such as The Cup and Ultimate. sooooooooo many cards of guys like Cody Almond or Alex Plante who havent played more than 20 games. even guys who have played at least 25 games, like Ian Cole, has double digits in The Cup alone.
or my favorite one, T.J. Brodie. get this: 3 games in the NHL, 0 Points, 2 PIM, and how many cards does he have in The Cup this year? 10.......including a ARP and 4 of these are Shields! he shouldn't even have 5 cards in all of the products combined. but no, he has 59 cards this year for playing 3 games.....wowwww

There should be a minimum number of NHL games played before a rookie card can be produced. 40 sounds good!

Alexander Mogilny
Rookie year - 1989-90
Rookie card - 1990-91
O-Pee-Chee RC #42 between Phil Bourque and Ray Bourque*
Trevor Linden
Rookie year - 1988-89
Rookie card - 1989-90
O-Pee-Chee #89 between Luc Robitaille and James Patrick
Short print them if you want, but I like the set itself to include the RCs, not just have a set of RCs tacked on at the end.
* - actually, that's a little weird.

great read....thanks!
More games sounds like a plan. Anything 20 and over works for me.
I break wax from time to time and seeing Plante pop out instead of Hall or Eberle is truly a bummer.
