Basic Question About Young Guns?
Ok so I don't collect hockey anymore, but I see unproven young guys like Tyler Seguin whose young guns go for 100 plus, but guys like Matt Duchene and others whose are only 20 bucks...why so expensive???????

Tyler Seguin isn't really unproven at this point. He's won a cup, plays for a big market team and is lighting up the year at this point.
Duchene has never really grown off his rookie season.

The "Upper Deck" main set is the most widely collected in hockey circles. Not only do player collectors go after these rookie cards, but so do set collectors, team collectors, and in general rookie card collectors. It's the novelty of being the most notarized hockey set that gets the most action. Even though a few may disagree despite the action you see on ebay.Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd

You also have to look at which teams they're playing for. Duchene is in Colorado which, while it's a good hockey market, isn't a team that's exciting fans right now. Boston is exciting their fans. While performance doesn't directly correlate to value, it does play a role and Seguin and the Bs are at the top right now while Colorado is in the basement. Next season Duchene could have a career year and Colorado turn everything around while Boston falls to the basement and you'll see the prices move again.
As for why they're collected so hard. UD Series 1/2 appeals to both low and high end collectors. The Young Guns RCs are considered the standard and appeal to just about every collector out there. YGs are the one place a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't pay much, do.

Points and hobby value do not march in lockstep. Duchene's hobby love has declined since his rookie year to the point that you can get game-used memorabilia cards for a buck or two. Points-wise, sure he's gone up, but it hasn't translated into an increase (or even staying level from his rookie year) in his hobby values.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

As to the original question, YG's are the staple rookie card in the hobby and have been for 20 years. While there are higher-end alternatives that some people can afford to chase down, the YG is pretty much attainable for anybody in the hobby. You may come into it through the luck of breaking a $4 pack or you may be able to swing a big trade for it, but anybody can get a YG.
Why is a YG of Seguin selling for higher in February 2012 than a Datsyuk YG? Demand is high for Seguin right now based on the team's Cup win and his continued strong play. Yes Datsyuk is among the best in the NHL but his YG's have been around for many years, and most people that want one, have one. If you want to get one you're not in competition with all the die-hard Datsyuk collectors because they probably have at least a couple already.
