WOW Red Wings
...
Lull the Blues to sleep. Down 2-0, Datsyuk and Bertuzzi work their magic, 6 minutes left in the game they get one, then with 3 left, the Red Wings tie it up and Bert gets the winner in a shootout. Datsyuk with 2 incredible passes to Franzen, both goals into gaping nets.
The Blues Fans were in party mode most of the 3rd, then............
Silence.

Not making any excuses for the Blues, the Wings clearly earned that win, but the officiating could have been better. Franzen delivered a cross check right to Backes' face and drew blood at the end of the second. No call. And I'm still not sure that the Reaves hit warranted 5 minutes and a misconduct. Great game nonetheless though. Good luck to the Wings in the playoffs but...I hope they lose to Nashville. I don't think St. Louis could handle Detroit in a playoff series.

What you just said right here I think echoes in all of the heads of every western conference team. Yeah, the Wings record over their past ten is not great, but if you've watched every one of those games Detroit makes a third period surge, and their opponent plays timid and scared. They won't move the puck up ice, the won't forecheck, they basically go into a 1-4 turtle. I've watched Columbus, Florida, Nashville, St. Louis, and a number of other teams do it. As for Franzen, I am 100% positive he got called out in the 2nd by Babcock as I have only ever seen him play like that in the playoffs. He has been useless the past few months when he's been in the lineup, hence Nyquist getting his shot with the top line. I mean Reaves put his shoulder into Stuart's head, which collided with the glass, the refs hands are tied, regardless of Stuart's resulting injury. Franzen got in Backes' face because Backes was cheap shot-ing Datsyuk all night, and the refs recognized this.

Stuart's head hit the glass. All year long when heads have hit glass, they have issued a major.
I agree it was not a major, but they are upholding their consistency with what has come before in all hits where the head has eventually hit something.
That major wasted 5 minutes and caused Red Wing confusion AND a Blues Short-handed goal, so it was not definitive in the result.
The Blues just assumed they'd win, and Datsyuk took them apart by himself.

If Backes was giving Datsyuk cheap shots shouldn't those have been called? Penalties shouldn't be given based on what happened before. Make-up calls/non-calls are not good in my opinion. Also, the Reaves hit was clearly shoulder to shoulder on the replay. Perhaps the ref saw it as shoulder to head in real time though. It was a clean hit.
Side note: Datsyuk is a real force. If I had to choose any forward to start a team with, he'd be the guy.

Stuart's head hit the glass, read my post above. That is why the Major has been called this year. The hit itself was not a penalty, but because his head hit glass, they have called it all year long.
Heads hitting Shoulders, Elbows, or Glass have resulted in Major Penalties with consistency this season.

why does it seem like every wings win is a shootout win?

Last year they had a horrid Shootout record, so I will take the win. The reason that they end up in Shootouts is the non-panic philosophy that Babcock preaches.
It works fine with a Lead, but when you are down 2 goals late, it's a useless path to follow.
The Pens Game 7 win, was just like this game. Babcock waited too long in the SC Final to unleash the hound/hounds (Datsyuk et al) and they lost the mug.
Babcock is too patient for my liking. I loved the Red Wings 90's Cups. Score 5 goals then forecheck your opponent into the ice. This relying on 2 goal comebacks in the last 6-8 minutes of games, is far too hard on the nerves. Granted, the Red Wings of the 90's had one of the best penalty kills, the best PP. and one of the lowest GAA, not so today. They are defensively lacking from their last cup win, and seemingly today have big problems on the road.Last edited by centrehice; 04-05-2012 at 06:31 PM.

Immediate home game after a road trip. Not fun. Red Wings shut down by the smothering Devils defense.
Sheesh, puck control teams normally win this kind of game. Red Wings are flat again. They are staring 6th place square in the face.
The only redeeming thing? They might end up with either San Jose, Phoenix, or LA if they plummet to 6th.
