Help with Racing Collecting

I met a guy today with "a lot" of racing cards/die casts/mini cars. Ive never collected racing even tho I do watch it some. How collectable/tradable/sellable are die casts and such. What should I look for? What racers are hot? Are RCs valuable at all or is it about race used stuff? How much trading happens online?

Ill try to shed some light for you on your various questions-first off welcome to the most fun sport to collect! Your options are many. How collectable and such are diecasts depends a lot on two things-rarity and condition-if they were bought from say a retail outlet for a few dollars most of them are not worth much-if they are from someone who specifically makes Nascar diecasts (Lionel or Action) they can be worth anywhere from 60 to 250 dollars depending on which one. Older Earnhardt Sr or Gordon cars can fetch more. It is best to do your pricing research though or ask collectors of that driver what their opinion on price would be.

The cards tend to be fairly popular and hold their market value better than in most other sports. Racing as a sport the top drivers remain relevant and popular for longer periods of time and hold value as do past legends like Earnhardt Sr and Richard Petty.

As for what you should look for-that is entirely up to you. Press Pass is the only player in town at the moment and they make great racing products with many options from the low priced regular Press Pass to the high end Showcase Product. Redline which comes out in June looks great too-I might suggest that as a first buy.

What racers are hot: Danica, Dale Jr, Dale Sr, Richard Petty, Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Travis Pastrana, Harvick, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards all usually sell for decent prices.

RC question-certain ones are definitely valuable-as with other sports it must be the right one though. Racing collectors are not as crazy when it comes to getting and collecting the RCs though because not many are usually made and most are easily accessible (for instance I have every card from my driver's rookie year in cards (2003) because there were only 5 of them)

Online trading: A fair amount I would say. Not as much as other sports but if you know who and what your lookin for it happens regularly.

Thanks that really does help. Whats considered low numbered as far as die casts and cards? In football /25 or less is low numbered because everything seems to be /500 or /100. I picked up some die casts today Jr/Sr mostly, and will have a couple of cards tomorrow. Might try to pick up a few more cards soon. Looking mainly for Tony Stewart stuff.

yes super high end diecast (specific color chrome versions usually) that are /25 or less are worth the most but race used versions and regular versions #d anywhere below 1000 are fairly collectable

I got 13 Die Casts in total and a coin. Ill have two RU cards tomorrow from him plus some more coins. I wish he would trade the Petty Torino he has and his Labonte Piedmont. Wanted those but he wont let the go. Too many pictures to post but heres a link to what I got:

Now a question to you guys. Which number on here as far as production run do I need to pay attention to?


Also, how do I know if its a variation or a variation of a variation? How do those factor into production run?

The ARC (Action Racing Collectibles) /5,028 is the common one, and most likely the one you have. Unless the box has QVC-For Race Fans Only on it somewhere, it's gonna be the standard ARC version.

Depending on who you collect, there's always gonna be a few die-casts considered 'holy grails' and fetch pretty good prices on eBay, regardless of production run. Dale Sr's has quite a few. (Daytona Crash Car, Under The Lights, etc. etc. etc.)

Then there's the SUPER high end stuff like white golds, prototypes, promos, things like that. Depending on the car, they can easily bring in over $1,000. (Crazy, I know)

Like this car has a red wheel and something is different about the number on top. Do they variants like that or all made the same?

No, as far as I know, die-casts don't have variations or anything like that. They're all made the same.
