Card Grading - Basic Question

Okay, I was a long-time collecter in the 80s with some nice vintage cards.

I'm just getting back into it and card grading, in hopes of getting some nice grades on my cards.

A couple of questions:

1. Why in the world do I see people selling cards on eBay that are worth less than what they probably paid to get it graded? For example, I saw a 1986 Topps Ron Oester PSA Rated 8. Seriously??

2. What's the lowest price someone can get cards rated, either with PSA or Peckett? I've see around $5. If that's correct, that makes my question in #1 even more ridiculous, that someone is sending a 1986 Ron Oester to even get graded for $5.

Your help would be appreciated.

1. They were probably hoping for a PSA 10. People participate in Set Registries with PSA and if you get a high graded card (with a low population), you can make a chunk of change off of them. If the Ron Oester only has 1 PSA 10 in the world, it demands a premium.

2. With monthly specials and bulk group submissions, you can get grading around the $5 mark, yes. Typically it's a bit more though, because you then have to factor in shipping, etc.

If I can build on this question - sorry to hijack it - but, is a 9 acceptable for a grade or show one strive for a 9.5 as a mint card? I know the higher the better, but I read that a 9 is mint, while another site said newer stuff generally requires a 9.5 to be mint.

Definitely the higher the better. From what I've seen on cross-grading, a PSA 10 is about the same as a BGS 9.5.

So a BGS 9.5 is a Gem Mint (same as a PSA 10) and a BGS 10 takes it to another level and is pretty much an absolutely PERFECT card. Gem Mint can have a certain level (very small) of imperfections.

It depends on a number of things if a 9 is considered "worth it".

If there are no 9.5's or 10 of a card, then a 9 is the highest possible grade at this point you could find. Some 9's go for premiums because of this. Even having low population 10's helps with the value of a 9. Population reports help.

Also, if it's a card that YOU want, it shouldn't matter the grade. :)

Yeah, there is a card I want that is a 9 and will be awesome for my collection - just wanted some feedback on the whole grading thing.

Looks like SOMEONE would. There are 16 Dan Marino Master Set's out there. I'll be honest, it seems that the market has shifted down a bit lately for graded cards. At least the ones I've had dealings with.
