It reminds me of the allegations made against Kobe Bryant a number of years ago, with maybe sans the death threats against said accuser.
If a male athlete makes a ton of money (Doughty just into the first year of making an average of $7M a season for the next eight years), woman will do anything to get their hands on money, including flapping their gums about relations with said celebrity, blackmail, or making false accusations.
The timing of the accusation also made this extremely suspicious. Famous people with money tend to have to deal with this probably more times than what is known to the public.
