I think Doan is a good player who has had a nice career, but he gets far too much credit for unquantifiable qualifies like heart and leadership, while apparently escaping any criticism for his teams' constant failure. I think he's a decent second-line player, but he gets far more credit than deserved.
Those getting $7m+ should be guys capable of scoring 35-40 goals, something Doan has never done. Even Semin makes more sense at that salary, since he's younger and actually has 40-goal talent.

True, but its much easier to succeed when no one sees you fail.
It's much harder to do what he has in a media fishbowl like Montreal, Toronto, Pittsburgh etc when you are scrutinized on every play and afraid to make mistakes.
Either way, unless he is bringing another 20 goal forward with him hidden in his luggage, he is far from a $7M player.

I'm not agreeing that he is worth 7 Million, far from it, I am just replying to FredBear who is citing examples that don't apply to Doan.

I hate to say, but heart and soul mean crap if the player does not perform to the amount he's expected to make for his contact. A 50-point season is not going to be sufficient for a 35+ player wanting 7.5M a season. If I recall, the IR cap relief is 100K max a season on 35+ players, which is a serious cap hit.

Seriously?
I think you're the only guy on the boards who can turn a general discussion about Shane Doan into something personal... You're free to offer your comparisons...
The article said he wanted the money from a team not named the Phoenix Coyotes. That opened the door to look from comparisons outside of the Desert Dogs. Sorry that I've offended you, again...
As to the actual discussion... Doan's agent is supposedly back-peddling saying that they never said any of this, but that it was an initial offer from a 'mystery' Eastern conference team early in the free agency period. http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...d-Bernier.html
Sounds like a lot of grand standing as he tries to see who'll pay the most. The THN article cites an Ottawa Senators reporter who claims the Penguins have offered 4yrs at $6M per. I can see him getting that based on current 'NHL-economics' (especially if GMs are counting on a salary rollback being part of the new CBA), but $7.5M a season would have to be from a team trying to get to the cap floor (rebuilding or small market), not a team looking for a Cup.
As others have pointed out, on a top-tier contender, he's a second- or even third-liner who'll help with special teams minutes. A great leader, a great team-mate (from what guys say), but not a $7.5M/season forward.

Read that rumoured Penguins offer... meaning it's likely not true unless Shero concussed himself lately. If it were, he would have to be compared to Crosby or Malkin's cap hit for what they produce.
Anything more than 5M is probably too much for him. Selanne's deal for 4.5M for a season is probably a better deal if he was willing to play elsewhere.

Fred:
Your examples don't apply to Doan because Doan never played for a team that won a Stanley Cup or just participated in one. Doan is not Parise, Doan did not play in New Jersey.
How was I personal? C'mon spit it out. Did I call you a name?
Good Grief

Funny part about all this is that some team will pay to get him - look at all the UFA contracts that are signed - these days, I wouldnt be surprised if someone signed him in that range - maybe 7.5....maybe 6.5 - either way - he will get signed - Teams know what he is capable of.....and if you take a look at the last 3 years of UFA signings - its wacked contracts that make no sense....
I would love to see him on the Kings....Hated playing against him in the playoffs but you can see the passion he has for the game....he is a PURE team player....he will do whatever it takes to help his team win....
