Scanner Problems - I Need Help

I have a Canon Pixma - MP620 Printer/Scanner Combo machine. It prints excellent copies, and it scans quickly and like a dream.....

Here is my situation. We only print about 5 copies per month on the machine, if that. Whenever one of the ink wells dries out, it puts the machine into default mode and won't allow the scanner to work. The machine simply shuts down and will not work until the ink well level is satisfied.

Any suggestions as to how to stop Ink from evaporating? We really don't print things with it, and every 40-50 days we get an out of ink situation that stops the scanner from working. I scan about 5,000-7,000 images per year,

    Can anybody suggest:

    1. A Cheap alternative for ink or cartridges?

    2. Can somebody recommend a stand alone scanner that is fast and clear with good detail.

    3. Any way out of this predicament without spending gobs of money.

Any and all suggestions would be welcome. I'm a Sales guy, not an office guy. The video on You Tube to inject your own ink into the wells is more difficult than swimming the English Channel.

In terms of compatibility, I am running a 28 inch Mac, not that it should matter.

Scanning options, especially scanner recommendations would be a big help

    Thanks in advance

Somehow I have figured out how to trouble-shoot and have by-passed the printer and it's insanity, and the scanner now works without having to satisfy the printer's needs.

    Woo-Hoo
