You certainly can get a full gamer for the price of shield, or even save a bit.
But the answer is this.
Aren't you in the Hockey Card Hobby. And in general, more individuals are inclined to collect cards more than jerseys. The secondary market is a lot larger than a jersey/memorabilia market.
I own both. The rookie shield of several individuals and the gamers from the rookie year of these individuals as well. Which one do I enjoy more. Of course the cards.
I can share the cards, bring them around, show them off. Frankly, more individuals are attracted to the cards. Wow, look at the design, nice card. If you talk about the gamer. Oh cool, nice. But you don't really see a difference between that a regular NHL jersey someone can buy from the store.
When something like a gamer is made into a card, the market widens cause there is always opportunity to fit something small and unique into the collection.
That is why, card companies inserted gamers in the first place.

To be honest, game-used cards aren't really my cup 'o tea so I am obviously going to be a little biased. I can certainly understand why a modern collector would think that a shield would be awesome, but for me growing up collecting through the 90's I prefer a nicely designed insert card. If I want anything game-used, I will just save my pennies and buy a jersey, stick, gloves, etc. Also, I have a big problem with cutting up jerseys of retired players. It just seems wrong.

Who's paying over $3000.00 for a Gretzky Graded 9 Rookie?
Nobody......
And a Gretzky 9 Graded Rookie is worth 10-15 times as much as that Schiefle card. Now do you see what I mean?

I see where you're coming from, but I think the argument could be made that we're overpaying for far more cards than just Shields - Cup rookies, autographs of stars who have signed thousands of cards, or whatever else. Shields just seem to be the worst offender, especially the hot, new stars.
As for the Gretzky/Scheifele comparison, I'd say that Gretzky should be worth more in a world where logic applies. And in all likelihood, the Gretzky will retain its value while Scheifele comes back down to Earth so at least some order is restored.

Shields Auto 1/1 cards worth more because they are the finest cards made, it is as easy as that. Don't look only on eBay to put a value on those cards, in lucky week you'll get a Roy/Hextall for $1026, then you resell it offline for $4500, and you'll see it back months after back on eBay for $6999. So, the real value of cards like that are difficult to set, but they worth a solid coin if names are solid on the card. But we can't compare value of this kind of collectables with game-used equipment, even vintage stuff; different collectables with different collectors.

Why not? I thought the whole draw to a memorabilia card was that it was game-used, which is kind of funny, because a lot of these shield cards are only event-worn. Don't misunderstand, I'm not bashing people that buy shield cards, it's just my point of view that the price for them doesn't make any friggin' sense. I understand the concept that it is a card, and we are collecting cards, but before I drop 2 grand for a very small piece of the jersey, I would just rather get the entire jersey for the same price. Memorabilia cards are cool and everything, I just think that it's been done to death and is ruining this hobby. I will say though, the memorabilia cards that have the players auto on the piece of game-used whatever are very cool. Kind of like this.

^ it is different than a complete game jersey in that there is only 1 of x player's shield card in a given series
If there was only 1 game used sweater of x player made available each year collector demand would go up
