    Handwritten #s on the cards

Do the card companies hand write limiting #s on the cards? I am looking at a very short print Fleer auto card on ebay and the numbers are hand written rather than embossed. The seller has 100 % feedback on a few hundred sales and says the card came out of the pack that way. The ink is a different color than the signature and the seller surmises that a Fleer rep did it.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

He's probably telling the truth. Do you have a link to the auction we could see?

Don't worry...I'm not the kind of guy that would "steal" a card you are bidding on.

Okay, I searched for other 2001 FLEER GREATS OF THE GAME AUTO'ed cards on Ebay and couldn't find one card that was serial numbered with ink.

That would make me skeptical. It's a shame that Fleer is out of business or I would suggest contacting them. Maybe someone here at SCF has a 01 GOTG AUTO and could answer your question.

I'm going to keep checking though.

Yea, the hand numbered seems kinda weird. Why is the auto black and the hand numbered blue? That can't be right because on most hand numbered auto cards, both the auto and hand numbered are the same colors.

I'd ask to see the back of it too..maybe the usual "COA" from the company on the back? That would seal the deal, I would imagine.

I appreciate the help. I asked the seller and he said he thought it was weird that it was different colors and that perhaps a Fleer rep did it. I don't know if Spahn was sick in 2001 and they wanted him to do as little as possible; he died in 2003. I'm trying to collect some auto's of dead hof's -- at least I know those players aren't signing tons of cards anymore.

I looked in beckett.com and card was never numbered, lowest ratio was willie mays at /100, and all greats of the game for 2001 I have ever seen are always in black ink, the signature is real but the the scarcity is suspect.

Yep, I just looked too. This has to be a scam.
