Just adding to the debate here -

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/matt-ha...lt-weapons-ban

"We need to get guns and bullets and automatic weapons off the streets. They should only be available to police officers and to hunt al-Qaeda and the Taliban and not hunt elementary school children," an emotional Lemon appealed.

For some discussion sake - Should the police be allowed automatics and not citzens?

Working in the law enforcement field i can tell you police are already outgunned by what is on the street. The illegal assault weapons out there is ridiculous.Police should be allowed whatever weapons they need to serve and protect

So long as that's how they use them. No offense but if nine people get hit with police bullets while they were chasing one guy, you have to wonder if they're capable.

I'm saying better training is needed for police, not that police are incapable.

As long as they're serving and protecting, agreed. Should the citizens be allowed to carry equal artillery?

Shockingly we are going to argee on something.Training is a HUGE component in making it work.Of course therfe will be cries of spending the extra money on training but the outcome will be a better trained staff. We don't want drug dealers and other law busters killing our law enforcement or us that they protect

Personally, I believe this all stems from the fact that Americans don't want to give up any of their rights.

Currently, we have the rights to buy assault weapons.....This is one right I would be more than happy to give up if it meant that the rifle that this individual used to kill 26 innocent lives could be banned altogether.

The argument that criminals are still going to get their hands on assault weapons is not one that should deter the banishment of these weapons.

BTW, last time I checked......the people who do these horrific massacres ARE NOT CRIMINALS!!!!

They are not giving up any right with assault weapons being banned. As well I do no thtink they should have the protection of the 2nd amendment.

These horrific attacks have not been done by people with criminal background. And not arguing that all weapons should be available. But let me ask you did Timothy Mcveigh use assault weapons for his terroristic attack? If you eliminate weapons completely then don't you think this sick society will use other methods. You seem like you do your homework Google " how to make a homemade bomb" and tell me what you come up with. Most of it you can get at the supermarket and your local hardware store.

I get called a cop hater a lot. The fact is I think the training most officeres go through is weak and probably outdated. The jobs of those higher on the chain depend on things staying as they are, or the poor training will be outed and jobs will be lost due to neglect and/or ineptitude. I truly feel sorry for most officers because it isn't their fault, but the uniform associates them.

Shocking how we talk about racism and sterotyping in other posts. And how the uniform is percieved.Training now a days is much more detailed believe it or not.Because now we live in a sick society with terrorist training in our schools and country and weapons of mass destruction on the streets in the wrong hands
