Fox News Co-Host Apologizes for Rape Remark
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Fox-Co-H...k-1061248.aspx
Fox News co-host Bob Beckel apologized Wednesday for controversial remarks he made on Tuesday regarding the prevalence of rape on college campuses, Newsbusters reports.
On Tuesday's edition of Fox News' The Five, the liberal co-host asked "when was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?"
"What are you talking about?" co-host Eric Bolling responded. "It's rampant." Added co-host Dana Perino, "In particular, date rape on campus."
Yahoo! reports that in 2010, the Department of Justice estimated that 25 percent of college women "will be victims of rape or attempted rape before they graduate within a four-year period." The study also estimated that women between the ages of 16 and 24, will experience rape "at a rate that's four times higher than the assault rate of all women." In schools with more than 6,000 students "average one rape per day during the school year."
Beckel publicly apologized on the Wednesday edition of The Five for the comments he made the day prior. "It's a horrible, horrendous issue. And it's simply put, this, rape is rape. Whether it's date rape or it's somebody coming in off the campus trying to rape somebody else. I very strongly feel that way," he said. "And so, I just want to straighten the record out on that. I simply was trying to make -- there was not a distinction to make here. It simply was that date rape is rape. And that is, by any other definition, rape is rape."

25% of women raped at college? That's complete balderdash. Department of Justice estimates my arse. There's not a chance in the World that that figure is even close.
If 25 % of all college aged women are raped, then that means that about 28% of all women in society are raped, as rape is highest among lower socio-economice societies, and their populations are triple that of college women attendees.
Where do they pull these garbage statistics from?
Or is this just Faux News with another in the long list of Faux's paranoia and fear mongering tactics?
Rape is an abominable crime, but I'm not so sure that that College figure is anywhere near close to the truth.

The stats may not be that far off. You have to pay careful attention to what it says; "rape or ATTEMPTED rape". An attempted rape could be anything as minor as a guy trying to get to second base and not accepting the first "No" as an indication to stop what he is trying to do. I am sure the conductors of the survey had an agenda to get the percentages as high as possible and used a very liberal interpretation of what an attempted rape is.

You are going to have to explain to me what 2nd base is, as I've never known, nor do others, as Baseball is only played in Japan, North American, Central and South America, the rest of the World wither plays Cricket of cannot be bothered with the stupid game.
You would have to carefully use an indicator word or words or a specific behavioural action in conducting a study like that, especially in trying to quantify attempted rape.
Did they consider these words in the study I wonder:
"Not now"
"Later"
"Would you like another beer, or glass of wine?"

It is a non foxnews website quoting Yahoo reporting on something said by the DOJ in 2010. If you have a problem with the statistic then it would be somebody on that food chain you would have to take issue with.

wow. 25% is way higher than what I would have thought. Seems like this guy was in the same boat. If you base things off of what gets reported by the news you really don't hear about it. Although basing what you hear in the news on what you think actual stats are is no way to get an accurate number. From seeing his quote I really don't see the offense. He obviously didn't know what the stats were or had never seen this report. I would have guessed that number was high too.

Same. I would have guessed around 10% in all honesty. That said, I would have been guessing on "rape" (which is not really open to interpretation) and not "rape or attempted rape" which, as Hice pointed out, is very open to interpretation. So I would have been refering to something else, as I think he was as well.
