“In my view the approach of the federal government to violent crime should be very simple, it should be focused on stopping violent criminals,” Cruz said ahead of the vote. “[S. 649] doesn’t target violent criminals, it targets law abiding citizens.”

Again, cons are trying to stop crime, libs are trying to save lives. No point talking if we're not having the same conversation, though I'm pretty sure that how cons like it.

You conservatism has altered yours, since, yet again, you claim something I didn't say. You use roundabout arguments about how only criminals kill in an attempt to ignore the fact that the ease of obtaining guns in the US facilitates otherwise good and law-abiding citizens into criminals by allowing them to kill so easily. When that is pointed out, you circle back to "they're killers therefore they're criminals!" and then pat your back when the left gets sick of your self created catch 22 and walks away.
Basically it's a sick, disgusting way of doing things and proves the conservatives want only to punish and couldn't care less about preventing children from dying.
Funny how the Republican party, who DOES NOT give in to special interest groups, gives in to the NRA and Big Business so, so often.

Someone needs to explain the reason why we have laws to conservatives.
They are to make sure we have a civil society that stays peaceful.
Saying that criminals do not obey laws in NOT a good reason why not to have laws.
A "criminal" will not obey the law in regards to driving drunk....so why even have a law that one can't drive drunk?
This type of logic makes zero sense.
We don't make laws in order to bother people who will obey them no matter what, we do them as a deterrent.
Let's pretend we lived in a society where there were no laws....we have done so because we believe that there is no need for them since "good people" will naturally do "good things".
But if the logic that "Criminals will do whatever they feel like" is present....than where is the deterrent and justice when they actually do commit "crimes"?
A universal background check is perfectly reasonable....every single person (no matter what way they buy it) should be checked to see if they are eligible to have a gun (in other words, they are not mentally ill and they have not been convicted of a violent crime).
If you are "law abiding citizen" then you don't have to worry about this check....it's a very small inconvenience.
However, it will stop REAL existing criminals and Mentally ill people from an easy gun purchase.....that's logical.
The GOP and conservative response to this is that criminals will find another way....OK! LET THEM!Last edited by JustAlex; 04-23-2013 at 12:04 PM.

And let's focus more on the *ahem* "law abiding citizens" who are selling guns without background checks and to anyone.
Here we have conservatives saying "criminals don't follow laws, so no new gun laws!"
and then having the nerve to say:
"We need to make it illegal for felons to try to buy guns!"
What on earth makes you think criminals will follow this law if they won't follow any other (your words, not mine)?
They won't and you know it. And if you don't go HARD after the sellers, those criminals will still get their guns, the "law-abiding" seller (who isn't) makes money off death. The ONLY good thing that can come from such stupid legislation is further overcrowding of prisons, which conservatives are fin with, since overcrowding means more business to privatised jails.
Again, conservatives prove they care more about their own pockets than human life.
Disgusting.

weird, because I never said we didn't need laws, I said killing is a crime. and when you kill you are a criminal, doesn't matter what you did before hand or not.
what the republicans tried to pass was tougher gun laws, but because there was no ban on anything, it is not good enough.
it was voted down, but no one is complaining about that, just the fact the almighty dems law was voted down.
and if we listened to conservatives, the people on death row would be dead and many other criminals, thus freeing up space in the prison system.

you are in a dream world, millions own guns who will never kill unless in self defense
