Memorabilia vs. Auto
Just curious on everyone's take on this. Personally, I prefer memorabilia cards to autos. Just feels like owning a little piece of history. However, auto cards appear to be more popular on the secondary market. Of course, the whole sticker vs. hard signed comes into play as well. What do others prefer collecting?

I mainly collect hockey cards for the autos. Instead of pictures, pucks, and other stuff. I find it easier and more fun with cards. I do have game used jersey cards as well but I prefer autos.

Cant I just love both!!! =P
Because the market is so rookie driven ..... autos are going to be more popular. I can see with the vintage guys though, memorabilia being more popular.
Its hard for me to turn down a nasty rookie year patch, but even harder if there's an auto attached to it !

I like both, but I feel like jersey cards start to look the same after a while (patches aside). I prefer the uniqueness of autos.

For me, I'm more about the memorabilia. I love the variety of pieces that I've accumulated of the Sedins over the years - from older silver/red/blue jerseys to newer blue/green/white jerseys... shields... tags... shoulder patches... numbers... nameplates... emblems (especially the distinctive whale teeth pieces)... fighting straps... gloves... sticks... stick nameplates... and the not quite game-worn stuff like all-star lock nameplates, playoff / all-star goal netting pieces. So much variety in memorabilia - whereas every auto'ed card is basically the same auto... maybe the odd inscription or jersey number tacked on, and some players have their 'quality' signatures vs. their rushed scrawls. Of course I'm a tad biased cause the Sedins have some of the laziest signatures around :) But of course if the card is gonna be signed, it's gotta be hard-signed, sticker autos should have no place in the hobby.

In order of preference:
1) Hard-signed autos - you cannot beat the fact that the player signed the card!
2) Emblem or number/patch pieces
3) Vintage memorabilia cards
4) Cut or "window" autos
5) Multi-color or thick seam memorabilia pieces
6) Sticker autos
7) Single-color memorabilia
8) White memorabilia pieces (should be permanently banned)

Autos for me, the whole memorabilia has too many levels.... white color, single color, multi-color, patches, part of the logo, now tags, somebody always has a better version of your card. Try and keep it simple for me, and obviously hard signed over sticker, but even stickers at least it was signed by the player. Some of these jerseys put in cards you wonder whose jersey it was, or if it was actually game used or just photo shoot used, and then you get some colors that don't even match the players team. How many game jerseys do we still have laying around for Rocket Richard or Beliveau, makes you wonder.

Personally I prefer the hard-signed autograph the most.
That said, my main mission for the coming weeks will be to land a Maurice Richard game-used memorabilia piece. I have an auto of his already (Beehive Golden Originals!) but that's something that I really want for the PC.
I find that with modern players, there's just so much of everything that--unless you're a super collector/gotta have em all type--you need to focus on what makes you the happiest for your PC. Best example I can think of that's relevant to me is Carey Price. Even after the purge that's been happening for weeks now, I still have 106 memorabilia cards in my collection and 40 autographs (not counting the photos, pucks, etc.) - I found that many of the jersey cards I had didn't do that much for me or stand out in any way. Basic photo, basic swatch = blah. So a lot of those have been sent out the door allowing me to focus on higher quality pieces like patches, autographs, or cards of other players I collect...or just for the bank account. LOL
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
