Set collectors a dying breed?

I like building sets but it takes a while and can cost you a lot of money if you don't do it right. With that said, I do collect a few sets and finished building 2002 SP Legendary Cuts Baseball. That's a really nice set and a fun one to compile!

There should be somewhere then on the internet people can help finish their sets. I'm not sure if this is the place, cause everyone seems to be gu or auto hungry. I like them too but I like all of my cards. It's not a insert and 9 filler cards to me.

I think I have seen some sites that sell singles of commons for the set collector's. I have no idea what sites they were though.

The problem I found is that card shops don't break product like they used to and it's difficult to find the cards you need for set building. Card shows help a bit, but a set is tough to finish unless you buy boxes until you finish it yourself.
Another problem is what do I do if I want to have my 94 Arod SP or 93 SP Jeter graded? Do I break up the set to see if I can get a good grade? This kind of hurts unless I have a dup of it.

That is why i collect the regular Topps sets. No SP's and some pretty nice inserts. Plus the usual auto's and Gu'd.
If you have those cards as part of a set, I wouldn't break up the set just to have them graded. Only if I had a duplicate would I do it. That is just me though.

You mentioned seeing places that sell commons for sets. I was looking in Beckett's Marketplace and found one that specializes in that and their prices are quite reasonable. They are called "The Collector's Closet". I may be several commons from them in the near future as I have exhausted all avenues and am eager to complete my sets.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. I used to take my latest issue of beckett and pick out ads for stores that sounded good and check out there sites. That's how I found them. Also I made a post in the trading forum about set fillers I am trading if anyone needs any for baseball. Thanks wrafman.:)

I usually collect one set per season, and the rest of my money is spent on trade bait and Havlat cards, Last year I started 2 sets 02/03 Atomic and Crown Royal retail, they have nice base sets and the rc are not so SP'ed that it takes forever to get them

Since getting back into hobby, I'm mainly focused on sets. I don't like buying a box of random stuff, then having all the cards that I'm not into just lying around. Granted, they're good for trading, but right now I'm not a trader.
