Iginla cannot do what Horton does, simply because of age and lack of speed.

From what I can understand from CapGeek and Wikipedia. There are 2 periods for buyouts, after the 2012–13 season and after the 2013–14 season and each team has a total of 2 buyouts to use in those 2 years. The buyouts are only in place due to the lowering of the cap. This will assist teams in getting below the cap next year and after a few years the cap will probably be at or above what it was pre lockout so the buyouts won't be as necessary.

Seems like a waste of a buyout on Grabovski, could have let him play out his last year and see how he does before getting rid of him. They cleared the space to waste money on Bozak and Clarkson......

Don't think Grabo would have been given any chance to blossom under the curmudgeon Carlyle, pretty sure this move was greatly influenced by RC....would not mind seeing the Jets sign Grabs for a good price and see what he can do.

You're both right.

Each team was given two 'compliance buyouts' to get their cap number down for the new CBA. They were to use them either this summer or next summer.

They get two total, not two each year though. Toronto used them on Komisarek & Grabovsky, so they're done. They can buy someone out next summer if they wish, but the buyout would still count against the cap (as a normal buyout would). Philly is in the same boat: Briere and Bryzgalov have been bought out under the 'compliance' rule.

NHL & PA also agreed to let teams use them right before the season started, basically so Scott Gomez and Wade Redden could get out of the minors.


Any team with 1 or 2 compliance buyouts not used, can still use them next summer.


After that, it will be until the next CBA (if ever??) that any 'compliance buyouts' will take place. Teams will go back to taking a salary cap hit when they do it.

Interesting, didn't realize it was next year as well, if the Jets Kane doesn't score at least 25-30, he would be tough to trade at 6M per, he is only good for 20 assists at most unless he rounds out his game, that is a lot of $$ for a 45-50 pt guy. hope I am wrong and he matures into a dominant power forward in the 80 pt range.
