That is a lot of money. However they gave up a ton to get him in a trade and HAD to resign him. In the end though they have an above averaged player for a long time.
As for the argument pro athletes are way overpaid I disagree. Not many people are able to do what they do. The training that they do is hard work and painful. Most people would not survive the training. How many of us can shoot a puck on skates with giants trying to destroy us? Not many. How many of us can hit a 93 mph fastball consistently? Not many. They get paid a lot because not many can do it. If playing hockey was easy we would all do it. It is not and they deserve it.Flickr: Hidden Content

Playing Hockey is easy. I have always been able to skate better than I can run, and I am a bloody good runner. I don't bow down to any overpaid athlete, especially Baseball which is filled with Non-Athletes.

Last I heard MLSE was worth 2.5 billion, and the main shareholder, Tanenbaum worth 1 billion, the suits can afford to share the wealth with the talent.

They certainly can. Especially the write-offs they an claim if the ownership is not personal, and it's their corporate ownership. It allows them to be very profitable in any of their other ventures.

Worth it. He would easily get that on the open market. He is 25 with his prime years ahead of him and was a top ten scorer each of the past two seasons. Giroux, getzlaf, Staal Nash are all making similar, I was hoping it woulda been a more cap friendly 7.5ish, but this is far from a bad signing. Kessel is a game changer that can fly, and is improving defensively every year. He is capable of being a 50 goal scorer these next 5 seasons.

Have to agree, fair market value, over last 3 season, he is 7th in pts, ahead of Getzlaf and Perry, who play together, while Bozak is decent, not the greatest #1 center. They could let him go, but how do you replace that production immediately, sign a Brad Richards?! Only through the draft, and that takes a high pick and a lot of patience, something the Leafs do not have.

Not a Leafs fan but I have to agree with some that this is a good signing for them.
You can definitely tell that the Leafs are continually swinging in the right direction, and without Kessel they would not be doing that.
By far, this is not the worst deal on the Leafs today
