On the surface, if looks like the Habs were moving a d-man they have no need for with Beaulieu, Tinordi and other good (better) young defensemen in the system for toughness that they do need. Vancouver could use the added depth on defense (and a more offensive guy like Diaz at that) and Weise was a borderline healthy scratch for them. Spare parts would be fair, but Diaz seems to have more value on his own than Weise. The Habs should have asked for some sort of mid-late pick as well. That's my immediate take, anyhow.

Well, Diaz was a healthy scratch for the past 8 games. So there's not a lot of perceived value on him at this point for sure.

He's a serviceable enough blueliner, and if that's what the Canucks need that is what they'll get from him.

I don't know much of anything about Weise other than he's big and that's the current fetish for a lot of Habs fans who are perennially afraid of our team getting squashed by the Bruins and the Western Conference.

I don't think Montreal was going to resign Diaz this summer. So rather than let him walk, trade him for something. He was also a healthy scratch lately.

I think Diaz is a good D-man, but Montreal has better D-men who can move the puck (Markov, PK, and Beaulieu).
Emelin and Gorges are resigned for next year. Murray, Tinordi and/or Pateryn could play the 6th Dspot. So Diaz would have been the 6th or 7th Dman. But Drewiske is still under contract for next year, so he will be the 7th D-man.

I don't really know much about Weise other than what I read. But sounds like he is a hard worker with some size who is not afraid to rough it up. Hopefully he is the type of player who will go to the front of the net because not many Habs are doing that now. He'll play fourth, maybe third line. Montreal could use another player like that. Probably has better skill than Parros (just a guess).

Right now with injuries, Montreal is using Bulldogs at forward (first Leblanc and then Thomas). There is no forward depth on the team while they had depth at D. So I think this was a good trade for both teams as Vancouver needed a healthy D-man.

Talk out west here is that Vancouver has to move one of their many D men that make $3mil +. Those would be:

- Bieksa
- Edler
- Garrison
- Hamhuis

Out of the 4, think Hamhuis is a lock. If hes good enough for Team Canada, he better be good enough for Gillis. Garrison is the new acquisition of the group, and performing decently ..... and Bieksa is Torts favorite. Really do think its time we move Edler to the east to help out our offense.

2 cheap Dmen for now are Tanev and Stanton ..... that look like they are becoming good NHL dmen. That 6th D spot will now go to Weber, Diaz, Alberts or whoever we need for that certain game
