Those 96-97 Upper Deck Jerseys were all the rage in the mid 90's. My LCS in Moose Jaw when I lived there had a Lemieux for $1000.00, and because Fleury played for the Warriors they were trying to sell his card for $800.00. I do believe they actually got that too. They also had a Jagr, and wanted $700...... I waited till a couple years ago, and got one for $82.00 including shipping..... Good things come to those who wait I guess.
Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd

I remember when Stadium Club 1st Day Issues were a big deal! While I feel for those who spent tons of money on inserts during the 1990s, it has been fun being able to go back and purchase cards I could only dream of back then for a fraction of the cost. (Like a Mario Lemieux 1996-97 Select Certified Mirror Gold. I remember that set being huge back then as well.)

97-98 Pinnacle Totally Certified Mirror Golds and Platinum Golds were in the stratosphere in 1999-2000. More seemed to change hands in 1999 than a year earlier because not everyone was on eBay. By 2,000 everybody was on eBay and these cards just took off on the secondary market.

I was just getting out of cards around this time, so I missed all of that wildness when it happened. When I got back in the hobby I managed to pick up a Keith Tkachuk Pinnacle Totally Certified Mirror Platinum Gold #07/30.

Probably depends on what year you are talking about and whether or not you are talking about BV or SV. Not many people were on eBay in the 90s and card shops probably still make up a big chunk of sales.

Here's a Top 10 hockey insert list from September 1997 if you want a taste of what it was like:

I remember those lists! I'd pay for a Beckett archive of the old stories and hot lists. Do the Beckett online subscriptions include any of that from the 1990s issues or is it just the pricing information?

How does the demand for the Lord Stanley's Heroes Finals cards compare to the Hart Hopefuls Golds? Why is one set more in demand than the other? How does the demand for those two sets compare to the 1996-97 Black Diamond Run For The Cup inserts?

That was is from an old Sports Card magazine (a similar magazine to Tuff Stuff). I don't know if Beckett does that but I'm 99.99% sure they don't include those with a subscription. It would be neat if they did though.

I remember getting a Theo Fleury Finest Gold Refractor at a show once and being super pumped. Those Finest Refractors and Select Mirrors were some fine looking cards.

98-99 UD CHoice, dont get me started. I busted 55 boxes two years ago when all the wal marts got them in for 8$ a box and guess how many gold starquest I got.... notta!
Saw one lucky duck open one box here on the boards and pull a Roy, was so mad lol
I managed to put together the master set besides the gold starquest which includes the entire choice reserve parallel set, but not one gold. Most still go for minimum 100$. Be nice to pull the holy grail, the Gretzky gold #'d 99/100 lol. Sure u can still easily get 500-600$

I'd buy every box for $8 a piece too. But maybe they were hobby only? Did UD Choice even have separate hobby/retail stuff?

Those 1998/99 Starquest Gold /100 were impossible to find. I think I've seen 1 Mats Sundin. Couldn't afford it though. Could get several other cards for my collection at that price though it was one of my most wanted cards. I love 1990s inserts and parallels though. The hobby is over-saturated now and ruined for young kids. So few young people get into collecting due to the costs. Should established a cards for kids charity to give away cards for free to kids and get them into the hobby and collecting/trading. The hobby should be fun but it isn't as much fun anymore.

That's because UD produced millions of boxes of Collector's Choice and UD Choice, nobody opened up the product, and the majority of those that did were younger collectors who either damaged the cards or didn't have the means to put them up on eBay. That happens most of the time with retail stuff or "kid oriented" products but most of them don't number stuff and at the time something #D out of 100 was still really rare so the high value of the stuff kinda makes sense. I mean if you busted a buck a pack product and the insert was 1 in every 720 packs it would take $720 to basically pull one at the given odds so paying $100 to get the card from an eBay auction would be saving yourself some cash in theory.

I also forgot to add that these cards were heavily broken BEFORE eBay was anything. Now products get broken and anything rare is thrown up on eBay but back in the 90s what percentage of cards were listed on eBay?

I miss the 90's inserts, we are putting together a few sets from back then and will continue to start collecting new ones as well.....I agree with everyone it was so much more fun to collect when the jersey card was a case hit or harder as well as people actually cared about inserts and parallels. I have always been a bigger fan of nice inserts & parallels compared to game used.....i guess im the minority though lol
