USPS worker here:
Sunday deliveries are made during the Christmas season and some larger cities have Sunday delivery year round for packages (mostly Amazon).
My guess on the ability of USPS to track delivery in Canada is because all of that information is digital. If the carrier in Canada scans a package as delivered it could be tracked by the USPS if they have agreed to share information.Hidden Content

Canada Post is delivering on the weekends and up until about 9 p.m. on the weekdays to keep volumes down as it is expecting to have a record year for the number of parcels it ships this Christmas season.

This.
I am not sure what the exact policy is (Dunken Monkey, I assume, is correct). I have had delivery on the weekends in the past, but only in December. A lot of stuff is getting mailed, so they work overtime (later in the evenings, and on weekends) to keep on top of it.

I haven't been converted to the community mailboxes, and hopefully our new government will keep their promise and halt the conversion. I like having a letter carrier, and hope they will all remain employed. Thanks for all the input guys!

Also (I know a bit late on this post), Canada Post hires on seasonal staff for package deliveries around Christmas, so they work all hours/days and don't get paid anything special like their regular posties. They don't make huge cash doing it either, as they burn all expenses (gas, insurance, etc.), but that would explain why you got a delivery on a weekend in December... Only happens for packages though...
