Being a vintage Topps collector I will just state that it is hard to find cards prior to 1970. I have gotten lucky and found some as I go but overall, they are few an far between. I can find vintage baseball with no issue but hockey here in the states is ridiculous. Now, graded stars are different but then again you pay. If you find the right sellers you can pick things up, but most either only carry the newest hockey or none at all. If you like the challenge, anything pre-1970 is cool, except maybe the 62-63, just don't like it too much.

I have decided on the 1952-53 parkhurst set. Like ahmon, I like the appeal of the smaller cards, the checklist is reasonably short too at 105. While it does have 3 key rookies, Moore, Armstrong and Horton, it's not a huge deal since I was planning on getting those for my HOFer collection.
Since this will be a side collection, I will only be getting low graded graded examples (PSA 4 or 5) on the majority of them. Basically the eye appeal is what will matter the most. So if anyone has any cheap graded commons, let me know!

Looking at your past collections. I'm guessing you would complete the set before me. :)
I'm only looking at low grade raws. If you ever see a cheap low grade raw Doug Harvey, give me shout. Probably my favourite card in the set.

i doubt it! Priority is still on the HOFer rookies, this will be a much slower pace. I'll definitely keep a look out on raw/cheap Harvey for ya!
thanks!
