I think I understand why the Leafs traded for Plekanec. It's about flexibility.
Valiev and Rychel would probably never make an impact on the Maple Leafs' NHL roster. Two more contracts out the door, and Plekanec is also out the door after this season ends. so they ultimately free up three contract spots with this trade. They have San Jose's second round pick (which will be higher than Toronto's own pick, I have a feeling) so they were comfortable with parting with their own pick.

If trading 2nd round picks to merely drop contracts is the Leafs strategy I am surprised that they haven't had other dance partners yet.

That wasn't what I was implying. I have a feeling that Montreal wanted the second rounder as part of the trade or it didn't get done. Since Toronto had a higher second-rounder in their pocket, they were fine with it.Last edited by Leafsman; 02-25-2018 at 03:13 PM.

When he throws a blanket over Nash in the first round you’ll see. He doesn’t put up the numbers anymore but as a checking centre he is more than capable.

That’s a statistically small sample size. Most NHL GM’s rely on a little more information than three games. LOL
