They haven't picked him yet...they could get an amazing trade offer, you never know!

if the Leafs are offering Auston Matthews for the 1st pick, then MAYBE.... however, the Sabres defense is terrible.

Let's be realistic now Scott...that hypothetical trade is terrible for both teams. You already have Eichel and to get Matthews might make Jack angrier than he already is, because Matthews would take some of his ice-time away LOL.
To be fair, both Buffalo and Toronto need defensive help in a big way. Both have some good defensive pieces (Toronto has Morgan Rielly and Buffalo has Rasmus Ristolainen) but the surrounding defensive players on both teams leaves something to be desired.
If I were the Leafs, I would consider offering something to move up in the draft though. They won't get up to first overall but they can certainly trade out of their current spot. Toronto is finally in a situation to be able to give up their first-rounder and not be too concerned about it. They have drafted well recently and have lots of prospects coming through the ranks, but they need defense now, so if they can move a roster player (Kadri? Kapanen? Gardiner? An NHL-ready player in the AHL?) and their first-rounder to move up significantly in the draft, I'd be happy.

I suspect that Habs fans may want to acquaint themselves with the name Jesperi Kotkaniemi. He’s the highest projected centre in the draft and fits the organizational need to a greater extent than Zadina or Tkachuk. Yes you can always use a top winger (especially if they do trade Pacioretty) but you win the middle, you win the game. Having a legit 1C puts Drouin back on the wing where he can flourish while also addressing a 20-year issue.
Remember a couple years back when everybody was jumping on Columbus for taking Dubois over PoolParty? They’re looking pretty smart now eh?

All I know is that I don't think they shouldn't include the guys who finished 17-25 into the lottery. Carolina and Philly both moved up huge and screwed over a bunch of teams who lost out due to a random bouncing ball. In my opinion, the bottom 15 should be split into 3 groups of 5 and do a lottery within those groups.
